Glen Rock November 10, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Borough commuters want to save shuttle service by John Koster A commuter bus driver and several commuters have urged the Glen Rock Borough Council to work with them to save the commuter bus service that is slated for cancellation at the end of the year. “Most of us are willing to pay our way, whether it’s per ride, per week, or per month,” said Richard Felton, a commuter who said he uses the shuttle every day. “It means a lot to a lot of people who ride the bus once or twice a day,” commuter Robbie Rollins added. Griff Jones, one of the two bus drivers, urged the council to try to work out some sort of arrangement where commuters could pay as they go rather than face an outright cancellation. Commuters signed up last year at $75 for a year’s ticket, but the money brought in from 43 subscriptions was about 10 percent of the cost of operating the shuttle bus. Jones said that one-car and non-car families would be slammed by cancellation of the bus that takes the 43 commuters to the county bus stop and both of the local railroad stations. “Is there anything that can be done to save the service?” Jones -- a Hawthorne resident and a member of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps -- asked. Jones and another driver have split the shifts since the leave taken by Paul Herrlett, the original driver/manager of the program. The bus remains available to take senior citizens and disabled individuals to local markets and medical appointments. Jones said, that for some commuters, a mile walk in hot or inclement weather might make it impossible for them to work, or could force them to make a major financial decision. “Some people have only one vehicle,” Jones said. “They would have to purchase another vehicle to get the same service.” Jones offered to work with the council, saying he would accept tickets purchased at an increased price to better subsidize the bus, or collect money to pay for the individual ride. “The shuttle service puts very little strain on the bus,” Jones said. “We just drive around in a loop all day. A tank of diesel fuel a week probably covers the rest of the expenses.” “I will talk to the council about it, Mayor John van Keuren said. “There may be some insurmountable barrier (or) there may be no reason at all why we cannot do it.” The commuter bus was given to Glen Rock by New Jersey Transit, along with a three-year stipend to cover part of the first three years of personnel expenses. The bus caught on with only a limited number of local commuters, but senior citizens found the bus a great convenience and enjoy the trips to local markets and shopping malls. The Glen Rock Senior Citizen Committee has reinforced the council’s firm decision to maintain services for seniors even if the commuter service is dropped at the end of 2010.
