Ridgewood November 10, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 The water rate increase for customers of the Ridgewood Water Company, which serves Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff, is now projected at five percent for 2011, down from the special increase of as much as 15 percent mentioned at a closed meeting with officials Water rate hike now pegged at probable 5% from all four towns. The Ridgewood Village Council last week approved an ordinance for introduction, probably on Nov. 10, which states the increase at five percent, though Ridgewood Water Company Director Frank Moritz and Chief Financial Engle is involved in a number of charitable ventures that have earned him numerous regional and state recognitions. His signature achievement was to create Carnivals for Children on Wheels. Initially, he ran carnivals in a nearby urban Boys and Girls Club for 300 or more physically and mentally challenged young people. Engle now runs 10 to 12 carnivals each year. He enlists volunteers, arranges for transportation, builds booths, hires professionals (clowns, face painters, et. al.), finds venues, orders necessary supplies, creates a logo and a website for the organization, and helps raise the necessary funds. In addition, he still runs Purim Carnivals for young children in his temple. For the past two years, Engle has served as co-chair of the high school’s annual Relay for Life, raising over $40,000 over that period of time for cancer research. Last year, he organized a holiday toy drive, collecting more than 900 new toys for the Boys and Girls Club of Paterson. He is (continued on page 8) For the eleventh year, the Creative Living Counseling Center will honor local teens with the Annual Humanity Awards. Honorees include David Engle of Glen Rock, Adam Milano of Allendale, Caroline Elizabeth Perry of Ridgewood, Emma Rainoff of Tuxedo (New York), Alexandra Russell of Allendale, and Rachel Walsh of Waldwick. This year will mark the 200th student honored. The award honors students who have made significant contributions to their communities through actions demonstrating caring, compassion, justice, peace making, and community building. Students are nominated by their faith congregations, schools, or other youth organizations. The recipients will be recognized at a gala reception on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m. at the Cedar Hill Church, 422 Cedar Hill Avenue in Wyckoff. The celebration will include musical entertainment with Broadway star Julie Hanson and talented teens. Local teens to receive Humanity Award Officer Steven Sanzari cautioned that an increase, while unlikely, could still take the water rates above that figure. Wyckoff has initiated a legal action against the Ridgewood Water Company asking, among other things, why Ridgewood is purported to be using water fees from the three towns outside Ridgewood to pay the salaries of Ridgewood police officers who have nothing to do with the operation of the water company outside the borders of Ridgewood. The water company, operated under the financial control of the Ridgewood Village Council, has offices at Ridgewood Village Hall, a testing and monitoring plant in Midland Park, a treatment plant located in Glen Rock on land owned by Ridgewood, and a number of wells in Wyckoff. Ridgewood officials assert that the quality of water delivered to the customers is excellent and that the rates are comparable to surrounding towns outside the system, even with the increase. J.
