Andy’s off to college in Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’
the real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines -- Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello), and John Basilone (Jon Seda) -- across the massive Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. The miniseries follows them and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloodstrewn sands of Iwo Jima, through the horrors of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day. Production values are impressive, with authentic-looking locations, exciting battle sequences, and a large cast. A companion miniseries to “Band of Brothers,” which focused on the European Theater of Operations, “The Pacific” lacks the dramatic unity of the earlier series. Instead of staying with the same company throughout, “The Pacific” jumps back and forth among the experiences of the three central characters. This gives the series a more epic feel, perhaps, but makes it harder for the viewer to connect with the men in uniform on a personal level. The six-disc Blu-ray edition is packaged in a collector’s tin and contains several extras: featurettes on the real Marines featured in “The Pacific,” a behind-the-scenes making-of documentary, and a historical overview of the events that influenced the brutality of the war in the Pacific. A “Field Guide” allows viewers to navigate within four categories to access animated maps, interviews with historians and veterans, historical footage, and photographs. “The Pacific” is also available in a DVD edition. “The Goonies 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” (Warner Home Video) celebrates one of the most popular films of the 1980s in an elaborate box set. A group of kids determine to spend their last weekend together before property developers claim their homes and they all have to move out of state. In a last effort to save their homes, they embark on a quest for pirate treasure rumored to be hidden in nearby caves. They have to dodge a band of counterfeiters in the process. A sort of modern-day “Tom Sawyer” with an edge, “The Goonies” was the first film in which kids spoke to each other using less than church-acceptable language, which accounts for its PG rating. Director Richard Donner purposely creates a fast pace by having one scene lead directly into the next, having the kids talk fast and often over each other, and piling on one exciting (continued on Croosword page)
Woody and friends share a jubilant moment in ‘Toy Story 3.’
by Dennis Seuling “Toy Story 3” (Disney) dares to shake up a formula that worked so well in the first two installments of this animated franchise. Andy is now 17 and is heading off to college. He has to make choices: Which toys will be stored in the attic and which will be left for garbage pickup? A mix-up alters the fate of those toys left for the sanitation department, and they wind up at Sunnyside Day Care Center, dominated by overly enthusiastic youngsters. Sunnyside has a system of government overseen by the sinister Lotso teddy bear. Woody believes the toys should escape, and seek out Andy. This film enters territory far afield from the first two and is often bittersweet in tone, since it deals with the transition from childhood to adulthood. Andy is on his way to becoming an adult, and one of the first casualties of his childhood is the toy collection that entertained him for those happy years
when adult responsibilities were not even specks on the horizon. The nostalgic aspect of “Toy Story 3” might be lost on younger viewers, who will nonetheless enjoy the comedy and hijinks of Mr. Potato Head, Barbie and Ken, Slinky Dog, and Rex the Dinosaur. But adults will definitely identify with their days of youthful abandon. The combination of Disney and Pixar has been gold at the box office, and one of the reasons is the films’ strong stories. When these are combined with state-of-the-art computer-generated image animation and colorful characters, the result sparkles. The Blu-ray two-disc edition of “Toy Story 3” contains the theatrical short “Day and Night” and featurettes on the film’s genesis and production. Other editions of “Toy Story 3” include a four-disc Blu-ray/ DVD/digital copy combo pack, and singledisc DVD. “The Pacific” (HBO Home Entertainment) is the 10-part miniseries that tracks
