Midland Park Matters Midland Park Borough Administrator/ CFO Michelle Dugan has announced she will retire as of Dec. 31. She has held the dual roles of administrator/chief financial officer since 1996 and also served as tax collector and recycling coordinator. “I’ve had a 25-year career in public service and am ready to transition into something else. Life is a continuum, and I’m moving into the next stage,” said Dugan, adding that she is ready for some “me time.” The borough council does not plan to hire one individual to replace her, according to Mayor Joseph Monahan. “The governing body has been assessing its options and benchmarking ideas used by other communities to fulfill her responsi- November 10, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • Page 11 A Publication of the Midland Park Chamber of Commerce Administrator Michelle Dugan to retire at year’s end bilities,” he said. According to council President Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan, the council expects to distribute the duties among existing employees and pursue interlocal agreements with other municipalities or hire part-time professionals for those tasks requiring state certification. Borough Clerk Addie Hanna will assume the administrator duties along with her clerk responsibilities. Rudy Gnehm, the Department of Public Works coordinator, will take on the recycling duties. The borough is searching for a certificated CFO and a tax collector who can fill the positions on a temporary basis until a current employee can get certified, O’Hagan said. Dugan came to Midland Park after 10 years in Wyckoff, the last couple as assistant administrator to Township Administrator Robert Shannon. “I had a great foundation under Bob’s tutelage. He is the consummate professional and a great teacher,”she said of Shannon, who encouraged her to attend graduate school and pursue the state certifications. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, she received a master’s in public administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Of her 14 years in Midland Park, Dugan said she is most proud of administrative innovations that resulted in efficiencies in operations. “I was fortunate to have a mayor and council that fostered that kind of operation. And I’m proud of the staff - a hard core of dedicated employees who made all those efficiencies work,” She also credited the volunteers “who put in a lot of time to make sure our town has the right resources,” she concluded. Streets to be dedicated after Veterans Day services Two Midland Park streets will be renamed for World War I veterans as part of the borough’s Veterans Day celebration Thursday. Garret Swap and Harry Streetman were the two remaining veterans to die while on active duty who did not have streets named after them. The dedication ceremonies will follow Veterans Day services on Nov. 11, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Wortendyke (Central and Greenwood avenues.) The street that cuts from Central Avenue through the Pete’s Corner parking lot to the park-and-ride lot (shown on the tax maps as formerly Franklin Avenue) will be renamed Swap Lane. Swap was the borough’s first World War I casualty. He died on Sept. 17, 1918. The continuation of Madison Avenue to the park-and-ride, between Rosario’s Tratoria and the MedWel office, will be named for Harry Streelman. He died on Feb. 5, 1919. The public is encouraged to attend the services and the street dedications. Does Your Child Want to Be a Designer? We can teach her the fundamentals of sewing to unleash her creativity. June.
