Two men from Newton were apprehended for attempting to cash bad checks at the West Ridgewood Avenue branch of Chase Bank on Oct. 22. One of the men was remanded to Bergen County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. Chase Bank employees told the Ridgewood police that a person had appeared at the bank and was attempting to cash a fraudulent check. Detective Peter Youngberg and Patrolman John Chuck responded and arrested a 23-year-old man from Newton. Further investigation showed that a 21-year-old man from Newton, who was with the 23-year-old, had also cashed a bad check at the same bank. Both men were accused of theft and forgery. The 23-year-old was released pending Superior Court action, and the 21-year-

A Ridge Road resident reported that the battery from her vehicle had been stolen during the night of Oct. 20. On Oct. 25, an East Saddle River Road resident reported that his house had been burglarized by a forced entry of the rear door, between 9 and 10 a.m. An undetermined amount of jewelry was taken. Police also reported that the multi-slot parking machine in the Chestnut Street parking garage was vandalized when an unknown party jammed the machine in an effort to disable it. J. KOSTER

The American Legion Ridgewood Post 53 has selected Ridgewood High School social studies teacher John Domville as Educator of the Year for his “unceasing efforts to impart a sense of understanding and pride in the actions of our service personnel and the wars in which they fought.” Domville is a teacher of U.S. History and American government and politics. His classroom is a laboratory for high school civics education and patriotism. He uses a variety of media to convey the importance of being an active and par-
ticipating citizen. The American Legion also recognized Ridgewood High School seniors David Cunningham and Michael Mancini, who were selected to participate in the American Legion Jersey Boys State last summer. Jersey Boys State is a week-long program held at Rider University. The boys were sponsored by the Ridgewood American Legion Post 53. Jersey Boys State is a mythical 51st state organized and administered for citizenship training purposes under the auspices of The American Legion.
