Human trafficking and its impact on countless victims in the United States and worldwide have been featured in several books, films, and television shows, and has found its way into newspaper headlines with increasing frequency. While this attention has raised awareness of the crime, it has done very little to prevent trafficking. On the contrary, the rate of victimization has steadily increased. To help combat this, the director of the New Jersey Human Trafficking Task Force, and the Human Trafficking Unit at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, has called upon libraries for help. The Glen Rock Library, 315 Rock Road in Glen Rock, will present the Human Trafficking Task Force on Monday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. The program is appropriate for high school students through adults. For additional information, call (201) 6703970 or visit www.glenrocklibrary.org.
Library hosts Human Trafficking Task Force
The Human Trafficking Task Force will explain what constitutes human trafficking through a clarification of smuggling, illegal immigration, and trafficking; and will describe what a human trafficking crime entails, correcting assumptions and myths. Individuals within a community can, and very often do, help. Observant and compassionate neighbors have saved countless victims. Many traffickers have a tight hold on their victims and forbid any meaningful opportunity to seek help. Of course, numerous other barriers also exist. “I am confident that empowered communities throughout the state can and will save innumerable lives,” said Asha Vaghela, deputy attorney general for the Division of Criminal Justice. “I cannot stress how important individual neighbors are in the fight against human trafficking.”
Trees planted at Central School
At right: Ben Solomon, Tori Sheldon, Laura Nogara, Ian Dorsey, Alexandra Long, and Chris Wu from Glen Rock’s Central School help plant one of two new elm trees at the school playground. The trees were donated by the Central School HSA. More trees are on the way as the Central School Cub Scouts and the school’s Environmental Club have agreed to donate trees as part of the 11 Neighbors, 11 Trees campaign being run by the Glen Rock Tree Trust.
