Newcomers plan Novemberfest The Evening Socials group of the Ridgewood Newcomers will host Novemberfest on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at The Office Bar & Grill. Children invited to indoor tennis instruction The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registration for indoor tennis lessons for enthusiasts in kindergarten and first grade. All classes will be held indoors at Willard School at 601 Morningside Road (California Avenue entrance). This program, which is being held in conjunction with All Pro Tennis, will cover the fundamentals of tennis, development of eye/hand coordination, change of direction, proper stance, and stroke techniques. All classes will be instructed by professional staff in a small-group setting with a non-competitive atmosphere. Session I will be held Nov. 13 and 20, and Dec. 4, 11, and 18. Session II will be held Jan. 8, 15, 22, and 29, and Feb. 5. Classes are one hour each (choose from 9:30, 10:30, or 11:30 a.m.) for each five-week program. Makeup dates will be determined as needed. The fee of $95 per participant is payable to All Pro Tennis. Children are to wear sneakers and bring a juniorsize tennis racket to each class. Winter cooking classes available Children and adults are welcome to register for winter cooking classes at the Ridgewood Culinary Studio. Among the courses is a 12-week winter session for children that will begin Dec. 6. Also offered are opportunities for community service, private parties, Girl Scout and Boy Scout badges, children’s birthday parties, and private cooking demonstrations. Art, dance and music classes offered The Ridgewood Recreation Division is offering the following classes for the village’s youngest residents: My First Art Class with Abrakadoodle, for children ages 20 to 42 months and a caregiver, will be held on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning Nov. 9. Caregivers join young ones as they explore painting, drawing, sculpting, reading, playing art games, and having fun. Activities are designed to provide opportunities to engage their senses while building fine motor skills, language, creativity, and cognitive skills. The cost is $110 for the six-week session, which includes all safe, non-toxic Crayola materials. Mini Doodler Mix It Up with Abrakadoodle is offered to children ages three through five on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. beginning Nov. 3. This art class focuses on fun
while building self-confidence and freedom of expression. This is a mixed media class that includes painting, printing, sculpting, collage work, and more. The cost is $110 for the six-week session and includes all materials. Happy Feet Dance Instruction for children ages three through five will meet on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 8. This class offers an introduction to basic ballet positions and thematic movement exploration. The cost is $60 for the six-week session. Formal dance attire is not necessary. Children ages three through five may join Happy Piano, which will be held Thursday afternoons in half-hour sessions between 1 and 2:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 18. Students will learn the basics of music theory, and how to play familiar songs on the piano. Educational songs, props, and teaching aids make learning fun. Each child is provided with a keyboard to use in class. The cost is $75 for the four-week session. An additional once-yearly material kit that costs $35 must be purchased by all new students the first day of class. Exercise, art, and movie classes offered The Ridgewood Community Center at Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue, offers a variety of classes for active adults on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The late fall session will begin the week of Nov. 15. Participants can enhance physical stamina with classes of Silver Strength & Motion, Zumba, Jazzercise, and Men’s Fitness and Walking with Dr. Mary Ann. Meditation and gentle yoga offer relaxation, while the art of Chinese brush painting and fine art-paper jewelry offer the opportunity to fine-tune talents. The Hobbyists will offer “Movie Classics” the first Tuesday of the month from 3 to 5 p.m. Enjoy “Diva” on Nov. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. and “Billy Elliott” on Dec. 7. Holiday lighting & decorating advice offered Area homeowners are invited to two seminars to help with preparations for the holidays. R&S Landscaping and Backyard Living will offer seminars: Holiday Lighting: Tips from the Pros on Nov. 3. Attendees will learn how to design and install stunning lighting scenes, tree wrapping,
and more. On Nov. 10, the Holiday Greens workshop will include tips and techniques to create a 24-inch wreath, fully decorated for fall or the holiday season, complete with a bow. The materials fee is $75. The seminars will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Backyard Living, 235 Franklin Avenue in Ridgewood. Children’s theater series slated Tic Toc Theater for children will offer three productions for its 2010-11 Sunday Theater Series. The first program will be Dinosaurs by TheatreWorks USA. On Jan. 30, 2011, the Pushcart Players will present “Happily Ever After: A Cinderella Story.” This program will also be held at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The last production will be “Schoolhouse Rock Live” by Surflight Theatre To Go on March 6, 2011 at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood. All shows begin at 2 p.m. and last about an hour. Holiday Art and Craft Fair benefit The Last Resort Animal Rescue, an all volunteer, 501(c)3 organization that rescues homeless, neglected, and abused animals to place in adoptive and foster homes, will hold a Holiday Art and Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Christ Church, Cottage Place, Ridgewood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds will help fund animal rescue efforts, boarding, and current veterinary services. Veterans Day ceremony set American Legion Post 53 in Ridgewood will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the monument in Veterans Memorial Park at Van Neste Square, Ridgewood at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The pubic is invited to participate in this service honoring the nation’s veterans. Local musicians to perform The Christ Church Ridgewood Concert Series will open Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The concert will feature violinist Dimitri Hadjipetkov and pianist Marija Zorjan-Madison performing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Paganini. Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $20 for general admission and $15 for seniors and students. Children under 12 years of age will be admitted free of charge.
