Glen Rock May 26, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Municipal budget adopted; resident urges compassion by John Koster The Glen Rock Borough Council adopted the municipal budget last week after a plea from a long-term resident to show more concern for residents who are hard-pressed financially and less concern for the status quo of maintaining borough employment and a level of services not all residents felt they needed. “Every dollar matters, every dollar,” said John Hahn. “Those jobs that a lot of our fellow citizens have lost are not coming back.” The budget will increase municipal-purpose taxes by $128 on a house assessed at $550,000, the borough’s average. Bella Felling, a former councilwoman, and Councilman Mike O’Hagan praised the budget as responsible, but John Hahn, a resident whose father has served as mayor of Glen Rock, said that more concern should have been shown for people who have lost their jobs or suffered reduced incomes. Mayor John van Keuren and other council members listened to the resident’s concerns, but parried virtually all of Hahn’s suggestions that taxes could be trimmed with several reductions in staffing or services that wouldn’t harm the average taxpayer. The $16,044,206 budget was adopted unanimously. Hahn was the only person to speak in opposition to the policies reflected in the budget. The citizen said that the roster of recently promoted police seniors alone amounted to what he estimated to be $850,000. He asked why a town with a low crime rate needed so many senior police officers on the force. “Strong management of a police force is important in helping to keep the town safe,” Mayor van Keuren said. He added, in response to Hahn’s question, that police force requests for a lieutenant and an additional patrolman had been rebuffed for economic reasons and would not be considered this year. Hahn also suggested that money could be saved by shifting garbage pickup to once a week except in spring and summer months, and by instituting curbside pickup.
