Council trims $100,000 from defeated school budget
The Ridgewood Village Council has recommended that $100,000 be trimmed from the transportation item of the defeated Ridgewood Board of Education budget. The single $100,000 cut came from one of the items where school board and administration members suggested that a cut, if necessary, would be most acceptable. The board of education had initially asked that no cuts be made in the budget, which was defeated by just over 100 votes in last month’s election. Two residents at last week’s public council meeting agreed with the request. Ridgewood, however, has already sent Rice letters, which are required before job termination, to 32 village employees. The council members said they are cognizant of the need to adjust to tight economic times. The two successful candidates in the May 11 non-partisan council election, Bernadette Coghlan-Walsh and Tom Riche, ran on a program of fiscal caution, and won by a margin of about 3 to 2. J. KOSTER
Public schools accept various donations
Ridgewood’s George Washington Middle School topped the list of donations received at the May 17 meeting of the Ridgewood Board of Education. The George Washington Middle School Home and School Association gave the school $4,737 for the eighth grade school trip to Washington DC, and another $40 for the book gifting program. The Caron Family Fund also gave the George Washington Middle School $100 to be used as needed. The Ridgewood Baseball and Softball Association gave the Willard School approximately $1,500 worth of new clay for the small field. Bruce Hammond gave the school system $1,500 to defray expenses for an SAT prep course. The Ridge School Home and School Association gave the school $465.99 worth of library books. J. KOSTER
