Borough’s 2010 budget adopted Jacqueline Karle, Fred Bernardi, and Rachel Jufer will perform in ‘The Grand Duke.’ The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company has been presenting two complete G&S operas per year since the group’s founding in 1937. In keeping with this tradition of presenting fully-staged productions with orchestra, the comapny will present “The Grand Duke” on June 5 and 6. “The Grand Duke” was the final operetta written by Gilbert & Sullivan and came after the successful duo had split up for several years due to artistic differences. While this show never attained the popularity of their other famous (continued from page 9) thousands of dollars in Wyckoff. Hahn noted that Glen Rock residents didn’t seem to object to hauling recyclable materials to the curb, and suggested they might do the same to save tax money on garbage services. “We really don’t need two pickups a week in the middle of the winter,” Hahn told the council. Councilwoman Joan Orseck, among others, rejected this idea. “I knocked on a lot of doors this summer, and people really want the twice-a-week garbage pickup,” Orseck said. Councilman Art Pazan suggested considering a regulation that all garbage be disposed of in clear plastic bags so residents didn’t deliberately or inadvertently add recyclable materials to the garbage stream, which is both illegal and expensive. Hahn also suggested that the policy of establishing a maximum fee for pool membership that allowed large families to enroll children beyond the first three at no extra cost be reconsidered. He said his own family had skipped pool enrollment for the past three years for economic reasons, and added that large families also impact the school system – which Hahn and the mayor both conceded was the biggest piece of the borough’s overall tax rate, despite a mutually commended agreement by teachers to forego raises this year due to the economic crunch. “The vast bulk of the tax bill is associated with a demographic segment of the town,” Mayor van Keuren said. He opined that any municipal services cut during tough economic times might be gone forever and said the council had a mandate to maintain an infrastructure that retained an adequate level.
