Sixth grade students at Temple Israel of Ridgewood’s Religious School held a mock wedding. Every part in the wedding was played by a: bride, groom, maid of honor, best man, bridesmaids, witnesses, even the rabbi! During the ceremony, Temple Israel Director of Education Rabbi Sharon Litwin (at left) read the Hebrew wedding blessings, and Vlad Vandalovsky of Ridgewood, who played the rabbi and stood next Rabbi Litwin, read the blessings in English, as the “bride,” Cayla Whittaker of Ridgewood, and “groom,” Dylan Fishbein of Ridgewood, looked on. The ceremony took place under a chupah (canopy) and featured the elements of a traditional Jewish wedding, including the wedding vows (except for the ones that would make the wedding official), marching down the aisle, and the groom’s breaking of the glass. Afterward, refreshments were served at a reception. The mock wedding was presented in the context of students having spent the Religious School year studying the Jewish life cycle. Temple Israel’s Religious School offers formal religious school programs for children in Pre-Kindergarten through Seventh grades. For further information, contact Rabbi Sharon Litwin, Director of Education, at (201) 444-9320, email to slitwin@synagogue.org, or visit www.synagogue.org. Located at 475 Grove St. in Ridgewood, Temple Israel and JCC is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue with members from over a dozen Bergen County communities. Weekly Shabbat services are held on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. During the week minyan takes place on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday nights at 7:45 p.m.
