Legion prepares for Memorial Day The Ridgewood American Legion Post 53 invites the community to remember those who have served the United States at the May 31 Memorial Day service to be held at Van Neste Square in Ridgewood. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Attendees should bring chairs or blankets to sit on. Woman’s Guild offers musical program On Wednesday, June 2, at 1 p.m., the Women’s Guild
of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the public to an imaginary visit to the “Land of Make Believe.” The Blue Knights and Fair Ladies, a quintet from the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, will perform songs from “The Wizard of Oz.” The group’s repertoire includes popular show tunes and songs from the ‘30s to the ‘60s. A free will offering will be accepted. The event will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building, located at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South. Family Education is offering “What is Cord Blood Banking?” This one-session class will discuss the topic of cord blood banking, which is the collection and storage of the stem cells found in a newborn’s umbilical cord. Today, cord blood stem cells have been used successfully in the treatment of over 70 life-threatening diseases. When parents bank their baby’s cord blood, they are making a choice that could potentially provide a life saving treatment for the child or another family member. This one-hour class will be held June 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. The fee is $10. Nursery school offers enrichment Ridgewood Nursery School is offering a Kindergarten Enrichment program. This new afternoon program is for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten-aged students. “Big Ideas for Little Hands” is a flexible three-, four, or five-day opportunity for early elementary students to explore literature, math, science, social studies, and more in a hands-on environment. The program will include activities to develop reading readiness, math skills, introduce the scientific method, and allow participants to express themselves creatively through art, music, writing, and social interaction. The program was designed by Leslie Cimino, a certified elementary educator, who will also be teaching the sessions. Summer multi-sport camp offered Children ages five through 14 are invited to experience different sports from around the world during the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department’s upcoming summer multi-sport camp. Instruction and play may include badminton, baseball, basketball, bocce, cricket, net ball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, hand ball, floor hockey, discovery games, Olympic games, parachute, pillo polo, soccer, softball, tennis, touch rugby, and volleyball. All activities and games will be under the guidance of The U.S. Sports Institute’s coaches. This camp promotes integrity, self-esteem, positive values, and good sportsmanship. The program will take place at Maple Park Aug. 9 through 13. Full-day hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for participants who are ages seven through 14. The cost is $189. A half-day offering, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is available for participants who are five through seven years of age. The cost is $169. All campers will receive a USSI T-shirt and certificate. Participants should bring a bag lunch and plenty to drink. Appropriate clothing and sneakers should be worn. Senior softball picnic set Village senior citizens are invited for an afternoon of softball sponsored by the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation on Monday, June 14. This event will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Park North Field. Seniors can test their skills with the Baseball Trivia Challenge, and maybe even hit one out of the park. Hamburgers and hot dogs, salads, ice cream, and beverages will be served. A $5 fee will be charged, and pre-registration is required. Singles plan networking event Professional and business singles, age 35 to 65, will meet at Winberie’s Restaurant and Bar, 30 Oak Street, Ridgewood, on Thursday, May 27 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sponsored by the Professional and Business Singles Network, the event will include a cash bar, happy hour hors d’oeuvres, and piano entertainment.
