Inaugural class of Citizen’s Police Academy graduates
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office recently hosted a graduation ceremony for the inaugural class of the BCSO’s High School Citizen’s Police Academy. Sheriff Leo P. McGuire and Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney honored class members for their community involvement and commitment to public safety. “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the inaugural class of our Citizen’s Police Academy for high school students,” Sheriff McGuire said. “These exceptional young men and women have shown true discipline and dedication to learn about law enforcement and take an active role in the safety of their communities. I know these future leaders of Bergen County are going to make us all proud.” “By completing this specialized training, these young men and women have demonstrated that the safety and security of our citizens is major priority,” said County Executive McNerney. “The information they gained from the academy will help them better understand how law enforcement works. I applaud their spirit of public service and leadership and I believe we will see good things from these students in the future.” In addition to the County Executive and Sheriff, Class President Andrew Jimenez, Class Vice President Katherine Lupardi and Class Member Michael Castellano spoke on behalf of the graduating class. The High School Citizen’s Police Academy is modeled after the BCSO’s popular Citizen’s Police Academy for adults. The 10-week course is designed to educate youth on the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the role it plays in Bergen County. The academy is offered in a classroom-style format with periodic demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by real officers. Students gain an understanding of many of tools and strategies law enforcement officers use in a broad range of areas including homeland security pre-
