KIPP book collection announced Northern Highland’s National Honor Society is collecting gently used books for the Knowledge is Power Program School in Harlem, New York. Books are needed for readers at any level. KIPP helps bright inner-city children from low-income families further their education. Insufficient funding has left the library without enough books for these students. Brogan to discuss health care reform Sheila Brogan, eldercare coordinator, will present a brief overview of the new Health Care Reform measure at the Northwest Senior Center, 46-50 Center Street, Midland Park. YMCA Day Camp holds Open House Parents and prospective campers ages three through 13 are invited to attend the Ridgewood YMCA Day Camp 2010 Open House Sunday, May 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. This free event gives families and their children the opportunity to meet the camp staff, learn about programs, register, sample activities, and enjoy refreshments. YMCA day camps include Y’s Kidz Camp, for ages three through six, held at the Y’s 112 Oak Street facility; Camp Pamacka, for ages six through 13, held at a Ridgewood elementary school, Teen Trip Camp, a day trip camp for ages 12 through 15; and Baton Twirl and Dance Sampler, a special four-day introductory baton skills camp for girls ages six and up. Learn about cord blood banking The Valley Hospital’s Center for Women, Children and Family Education is offering “What is Cord Blood Banking?” This one-session class will discuss the topic of cord blood banking, which is the collection and storage of the stem cells found in a newborn’s umbilical cord. Today, cord blood stem cells have been used successfully in the treatment of over 70 life-threatening diseases. Parents who bank their baby’s cord blood are making a choice that could potentially provide a life-saving treatment for the child or a family member. This one hour class will be held on Wednesday, June 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. The fee is $10. Volunteers who devote their time and talents to The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care were recently honored at the annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Dinner. The awards included the Volunteer for All Seasons award, the Heart of Valley award, and honors for years of service. The Volunteer for All Seasons award was bestowed upon Glen Rock resident Michael McAndrews for his extraordinary service, which has made a difference in the lives of Valley’s patients, staff, and the community. The recipient of this award is a volunteer whose accomplishments serve as a source of inspiration for all seasons. Joyce Ochs of Oakland was named the Heart of Valley for her dedication, commitment, and spirit. This award is presented to unique volunteers who touch Valley in a special way. Country dancers welcome newcomers The North Jersey English Country Dancers welcome newcomers to the May 23 Sunday afternoon dance. All dances are taught and called, and the music is live. Attendees may come with or without a partner. The event will be held at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. Free CPR course offered Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is offering a free American Heart Association CPR Anytime program from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the CHCC Auditorium, 700 Mountain Avenue. Participants will learn the basics of CPR for adults, children, and infants, and will take home a practice mannequin, DVD, and certificate of completion. Light refreshments will be served. This program to the community is offered at no charge thanks to a grant received by the CHCC Foundation from the Richard A. and Loretta M. Stratton Foundation of Franklin Lakes. Meet the Designer Day planned The Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation is offering a Meet the Designer Day on May 22 at the Fifth Annual Designer Showhouse of New Jersey. With the $30 admission to the Showhouse, visitors may bring in floor plans, color swatches, furniture pictures, and other design inquiries for a free 10-minute consultation with the designer, decorative artist, or landscape designer of their choice. The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey, now in its fifth year, is a showcase for America’s premier design talent. Approximately 25 top interior and landscape designers from New York and New Jersey have participated in turning a Georgian colonial home into a decorating masterpiece. The Showhouse, located at 4 High Meadow Road in Saddle River, runs through June 6. Showhouse hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Mondays). Children under six, infants, strollers, and pets are not
