Local musicians win Roy Meyers Swingers competition
Vocalist Katherine Siegel of Wyckoff has received the first place $2,500 Pop Music Scholarship award from the Roy Meyer Swinger Jazz Vocal Group. The 17-year-old Bergen County Academies (Music Academy) senior sang her way to the top spot among the nine finalists selected from talented student applicants from 80 public and private high schools in Bergen and Passaic counties. The first runner-up certificate was presented to 18 year-old vocalist Andrew Gomes, a junior at Glen Rock High School. Kyle Kubicki of Northern Valley Regional High School took third place. The Roy Meyer Swingers’ school trophy will be presented to the Bergen County Academies (Music Academy) principal to be on display at the school for one year in recognition of Siegel’s accomplishment. In the event that she does not take any advanced music courses within a two-year period following her graduation from the academies, the award will be given to Gomes for his advanced music studies. The Roy Meyer Swingers, a non-profit, 17-voice jazz ensemble based in Wayne, has performed throughout the New
York metropolitan area, was a national finalist in Johnny Mann’s Great American Choral Festival, and has completed three Friendship Ambassadors’ European concert tours, including Austria, Germany, Switzerland; England, Scotland, and Wales. The group also spent three weeks behind the Iron Curtain in Romania while that country was under communist control. For information about joining the choral group, or to arrange for a performance at a special event, call Roy at (862) 264-6351 or e-mail rswingrp@optonline.net.

Caldwell has appeared as the host of ESPN’s “Sports Figures” and as a stand-up performer on many shows including Metro Channel’s “New Joke City with Robert Klein,” ESPN’s “The Lighter Side of Sports,” A&E’s “An Evening at the Improv,” and CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman.” Trackman, is a New York City comedian who has made national TV appearances on NBC’s “Later” and “Friday Night,” CBS’s “Star Search” and Comedy Central’s “Heroes of Jewish Comedy.” Tickets are $40 and include desserts. Teens invited to Video Game Tournament Teens in grades six through eight are invited to compete against friends in the Teen Video Game Tournament on May 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Glen Rock Public Library. Three prizes will be awarded to the three top players at the event. The first place winner may choose one of the three prizes, the second place winner may choose from the remaining two prizes, and the third place player will receive the final prize. Prizes include next-gen video games (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, etc.), DVDs, CDs, books, posters, gift cards, and more. There is no fee to enter this competition and no registration is required. For more information, e-mail the teen reference librarian at ian.parsells@bccls.org. Free trees available to borough homeowners The Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee has announced that borough residents may now request free trees. Trees will be planted in the right-of-way along the streets in front of their homes. While trees are being planted in November, the committee will be evaluating residents’ request forms as they are submitted and determining priority for planting. The top priority will be for trees on sides of streets without electrical wires. Second priority will go to locations on the side of the street where electrical lines are located, but where trees can be planted farther away from the street and not directly under the lines. Tree request forms are available at Glen Rock Borough Hall. Residents may send their e-mail address to GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail.com and an electronic version of the form will be sent to then. Special fundraiser underway The Home School Association of Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock is offering tickets for its annual fundraiser. The cash prize for the first place winner will be $25,000. There will be 10 prizes of $500 each. Tickets cost $100 and only 600 will be sold. The winner will be announced on Sunday, June 13 after the noon mass.
