The Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee has announced that borough residents may now request free trees. Trees will be planted in the right-of-way along the streets in front of their homes. The right-of-way extends from the street

curb several feet in towards homes, and the distance varies by street. While trees are being planted in November, the committee will be evaluating residents’ request forms as they are submitted and determining priority for planting. The top priority will be for trees on sides of streets without electrical wires. “Public utilities have implemented new pruning techniques in the last decade and the committee has decided not to recommend any trees be planted directly under lines at this time,” said STAC Chair Leslie Kameny. Second priority will go to locations on the side of the street where electrical lines are located, but where trees can be planted farther away from the street and not directly under the lines. These streets often have very narrow grass strips between the sidewalk and the street, or have rights-of-way that extend a little deeper into properties. If there are still trees available after the above two categories are filled, STAC will consider recommending tress on the house side of sidewalks away from the wires, on private property. In this case, the borough will be responsible for the tree for the first
year. After that time, the care of the tree will become the responsibility of the resident. STAC is currently recommending six different tree species: American elm, pin oak, October red maple, “Village Green Zelkova,” Greenspire linden, thornless honey locust, and sweet gum. The type of tree will be selected by the Glen Rock Department of Public Works based on the conditions where the tree will be planted and diversity of the tree species in that area. Diversifying trees along a street helps ensure that all trees will not be subject to a simultaneous die-off if a disease or insect affects the area. Tree request forms are available at Glen Rock Borough Hall. Residents may send their e-mail address to GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail.com and an electronic version of the form will be sent to then.
