The flag will be displayed on Memorial Day on one of the borough’s six flagpoles near the memorial at Harding Plaza. The flag honors the members of the Merchant Marine, a civilian organization that qualified for military honors for service during World War II, when German submarines and bombers took a heavy toll on merchant ships carrying war supplies to Britain and Russia during the early years of the war. The group later supported American troops during the invasion of Europe. The award also honored Captain William McHale, a long-time Glen Rock resident of years past who served as a merchant captain and later in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Captain McHale secured the ship’s bell of the U.S.S. Lang, a pre-war destroyer which saw extensive Helpful Hints Helpful Hints from ome Councilman Mike O’Hagan, Jeanne Rey, and Mayor John van Keuren.
