Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 12, 2010 Area More than 40 students presented posters and talks describing their undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities in the sciences at the ninth annual Theoretical and Applied Science Student Research Symposium held at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Research topics included how over-thecounter pain reliever acetaminophen affects the regenerative qualities of the mud worm, the implications of dinosaur speed estimates, the simulation and visualization of forest dynamics through computer technology and the microbial composition of the New Jersey Meadowlands, among others. The symposium provided a research conference atmosphere during which students presented their results. Sponsored by the College’s School of Theoretical and Applied Science and LeCroy Corporation of Chestnut Ridge, New York, the symposium was a full-day event that highlighted faculty-student collaborative research in the sciences. “The TAS Student Research Symposium provides an opportunity for students Students present research at Ramapo College program to present their research to others within the college community as well as to corporate research representatives from the broader professional community,” said Bernard Langer, dean of the School of Theoretical and Applied Science. “These research projects provide a unique, educationally enriching experience for students as an incorporate part of their undergraduate educations in the sciences and mathematics.” The following Bergen County students gave oral presentations about their research findings: Matthew Diamond of Ramsey and Jeffry Dodd of Allendale discussed “Analysis of Developmental and Molecular Effects of Creatine, Aspartame and Acetaminophen on Lumbriculus variegatus (Mudworm).” Edward Priestner of Midland Park and John Soltys of Franklin Lakes presented “Adsorption of Polyacrylates and Polyesters onto Silica,” and Miles Siegel of Mahwah discussed “Measurement of Mercury Vapor in Exhaled Air in Humans.” The Mahwah Museum will hold its May history lecture “Darlington Schoolhouse and the NY/NJ Trail Conference” on Thursday, May 20. Tours of the schoolhouse will begin at 7 p.m. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in Marion Hall at Immaculate Conception Church, 900 Darlington Avenue. In 2007, Mahwah and the New YorkNew Jersey Trail Conference became joint owners of the schoolhouse and restoration plans are in the works. Mahwah historian Carol Greene will explore the history and Learn about schoolhouse, trail group architecture of this 1891 building. There will also be a lecture on the history of the NY/NJ Trail Conference. Founded in 1920, this group partnered with the government and private landowners to create, protect, and maintain a network of 1,700 miles of hiking trails in the metropolitan area. On Loyalty Day, the military veterans of the Washington Elm VFW Post 192 (Ridgewood/Ho-Ho-Kus) joined forces with the Ho-Ho-Kus Community Emergency Response Team and conducted a cleanup operation of the debris from the recent storms that accumulated at West Park, located across from the Ho-Ho-Kus Post Office on Franklin Turnpike and at the historic First Street Cemetery.
