May 5, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Ridgewood Four candidates seek election by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council election will take place from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. on May 11 with no runoff required, since the number of candidates is exactly twice the number of council seats available. The 2010 election will be contested, as four candidates, three newcomers and one a former council member seeking a new term, face off in the biennial non-partisan election. Candidate Bernadette Coughlan-Walsh is a community volunteer who works in the real estate assessment business. Douglas Cronk is a member of the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment, the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce, and Ridgewood Guild. He is a local business owner. Brian Dowd is a commercial real estate salesman who advocates parking reform to make Ridgewood more attractive to commuters and shoppers. Thomas Riche is a former councilman and member of the Ridgewood Planning Board, the Historical Preservation Committee, and the Site Plan Exemption Committee. He decided not to file for re-election in 2002 and is now running on a “fiscal responsibility” platform. Mayor David Pfund and Councilman Patrick Mancuso did not file for re-election this year. Ridgewood’s non-partisan elections, unlike most of those in northwest Bergen County, eschew the involvement of national political parties or local Republican or Democratic clubs. Any contestant who can obtain signatures on a nominating petition equal to one percent of the electorate can obtain a place on the ballot. Teams of candidates sometimes run as local slates with special names, but national politics are not mentioned. Because there is no limit on the number of candidates, Ridgewood traditionally held a runoff election in cases where candidates more than double the number of seats. The first election eliminated all but twice the number of candidates as could find seats, and the second election actually filled the seats.
