This Glen Rock High School junior has completed the seven steps and 120 hours in leadership development, career exploration, and community involvement required to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, represents her personal journey of leadership, career explorations, self-improvement, and service. Schoenberg’s final project “Something to Smile About” is the culmination of her award. The daughter of a dentist, Schoenberg recognizes that a healthy mouth is an important part of total health. “Teeth that are strong and healthy allow us to eat and chew, to speak clearly, and to feel good about ourselves,” she explained. Because of limited mobility, individuals confined to their homes face special challenges in their daily lives. For these individuals, especially the elderly and chronically ill homebound, obtaining proper dental care is a challenge that often is not met. Schoenberg’s father has owned and operated a mobile dental service treating nursing home residents for over 20 Girl Scout gives others something to smile about years. “Over the years, I have watched my dad perfect methods of practice to cater to the specific needs of the elderly nursing home population, but there are many elderly patients living right in my hometown who do not benefit from proper oral hygiene care,” said Schoenberg. Nursing homes are mandated by the state to provide various medical services, including dental services to their residents, but these services are much more difficult for homebound residents to acquire. “The Something to Smile About project combines my father’s dental expertise with my commitment to Glen Rock,” the Girl Scout added. “Together we can educate our neighbors about proper dental hygiene and make dentistry available to all residents -- one smile at time.” Schoenberg’s goal, with the assistance of Visiting Dental Associates, was to increase awareness of dental health issues, increase access to affordable, comprehensive dental care, and to minimize oral infection and disease from preventable dental ailments.
