May 5, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Ridgewood Fire chief retires after 30 years in department Ridgewood Fire Chief James Bombace has retired from the department after 30 years of service as a firefighter and 10 years as chief of Northwest Bergen County’s only paid fire department. “It’s kind of bittersweet,” Chief Bombace said last week. “I’m looking at it as a ‘picking up and moving on to something else’ kind of business. I’m closing one part of my career and moving on to something else.” Bombace joined the force on July 7, 1980 as a probationary firefighter. Chief Bombace did not elaborate on his design to retire, but sources have said the decision to operate with somewhat smaller crews for financial reasons had been controversial with many firefighters. Ridgewood’s paid firefighters have been augmented by volunteers for some years, but the core of the fire department continues to be the paid firefighters. “There have been numerous changes in the fire department over the past three decades,” Chef Bombace said in a farewell letter. “Those of you who have been firefighters for that period of time know full well of the things to which I allude.
