Memorial Day service set The Ridgewood American Legion Post 53 invites the community to remember those who have served the United States at the May 31 Memorial Day service to be held at Van Neste Square in Ridgewood. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Attendees are reminded to bring chairs and blankets to sit on. Middle school mixers set Ridgewood Parks and Recreation, with sponsorship from the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, is offering Friday night mixers for Ridgewood middle school students. On each evening, there will be dancing to music provided by DJ “Sound Illusions,” refreshments, and games. Admission is free to village teens. Eighth graders are invited on May 14; seventh graders on May 21; and sixth graders on June 4. Foundation hosts Community Dog Show The Ridgewood Education Foundation will host its first Community Dog Show on Sunday, May 23 in the parking lot of Ridgewood High School, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue. There will be contests, and demonstrations by the Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, pet psychics, and behaviorists. Local vendors will be on hand, and event sponsor, the Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital, will hold free grooming sessions. Attendees may participate in the “King or Queen” of the day, and have their pooch named “Top Dog.” Dog-themed artwork by students will be on display all day. All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. 138th Annual Roast Beef Dinner set The men at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will take over the church kitchen to prepare the 138th annual full-course Roast Beef Dinner on Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m. in the church’s barrier-free Education Building. The event has been held each year since 1872 and descendants of the church founders are still active with the event. The dinner is open to the community. The church is located at 660 East Glen Avenue, at Franklin Turnpike. CantaLyrica to perform CantaLyrica, a chamber chorus, and the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra will join forces at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, to present a concert at the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. Joshua Greene, music director of CantaLyrica and former music director of Adelphi Chamber Orchestra will conduct the performance. The program will feature Bach’s “Magnificat in D” and Haydn’s “Missa in Angustiis.” Greene is an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera. He coaches Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera soloists and teaches voice, piano and conducting in his New York City studio. A sought-after accompanist, he has joined in song recitals with artists such as James Morris, Jerry Hadley, and Jane Bunnell. West Side Presbyterian Church is located at the corner of West Ridgewood Avenue and Monroe Street in Ridgewood. Concert tickets are $18 in advance, and $20 at the door. Group to visit cathedral, Cloisters The Ridgewood Choral will visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine and the Cloisters on Tuesday, May 11. The cathedral, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue in New York
City, is the seat of the Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of New York City. It is a stone Gothic Revival structure that was started in 1892 and is still under construction. It also houses one of the most magnificent organs in the world. The Cloisters, which is part of the Metropolitan Museum, is located in New York City’s Fort Tryon Park. This landmark is devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The tour bus will depart from the Graydon Pool parking lot at 9 a.m. and return to Ridgewood at 5:30 p.m. The cost for the tour is $60 and includes the bus and all tour fees. The deadline for reservations is May 5. ‘Brahms, Broadway, and Beyond’ concert set The Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the public to “Brahms, Broadway, and Beyond,” a program of German art songs, Broadway show-stoppers, arias, and sacred songs. The concert will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building at 660 East Glen Avenue at 1:15 p.m. on May 5. Performers will include Casey Molino Dunn, baritone and music director at the Rutherford Congregational Church. Dunn has degrees
from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Eastman School of Music, and international credits in opera and musical theater. A good-will offering will be accepted. Ridge School hosts Tag Sale Ridge Elementary School, 325 West Ridgewood Avenue, will host a Tag Sale on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Excellent quality items to be offered will include furniture and antiques, home goods, electronics, toys, clothing for adults and children, accessories, and more.
