Glen Rock May 5, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 13 Library patrons organize to save facilities by John Koster Glen Rock Library Director Roz Pelcyger and ResearchTechnical Librarian Laurie Feisthammel were delighted with the good turnout they had from library patrons as they passed out cards and leaflets urging residents to defend library services from state budget cuts. About 25 residents showed up to ask how they could help save the library services that Glen Rock residents have come to rely on – including books, videos, computer access with skilled help, and assistance for job hunters. Pelcyger and Feisthammel were also recruiting for a trip to Trenton to show support for sustaining services such as interlibrary loans, statewide summer reading programs, and the talking book and Braille programs for those who need them. “I don’t think the consequences of the cuts were thought all the way through,” Pelcyger said, holding out hope that enough objections to cuts might save some of the programs. Feisthammel noted that eliminating the state-funded and state-supervised interlibrary loan program, under which books may be ordered from around the state and the nation, would increase the state-wide cost from $3.5 million to $35 million if patrons continued to order the same number of books. The program allows library card holders to order books from public and university libraries around the nation. Glen Rock transacted 99,000 interlibrary loans on behalf of patrons last year. Pelcyger thanked the Friends of the Glen Rock Library for donating $13,000 raised at the annual book sale and reported that the library garnered $6,000 from a ReadA-Thon and said that Glen Rock’s municipal government had been as supportive as possible considering budget constraints. She added that reducing staffing had relegated important jobs from full-time staffers to part-time staffers and that she had some philosophical problems with leaving important administrative work in the hands of volunteers. Support from the council, fundraisers, and patrons, Feisthammel said, would probably make it possible to sustain basic operations, but around the state and in New York City, some libraries were said to be considering reduced hours and even shutting down the major libraries several entire days of each week. Comedy night (continued from page 6) A fundraiser will take place prior to the show. Featured comics for the evening will be Jon Fisch, Jeff Caldwell and Brad Trackman. Jon Fisch, a prolific monologist who focuses on the idiosyncrasies of city living, was chosen as one of Comedy Central’s Fresh Faces of Comedy and named one of Back Stage Magazine’s 10 Standout Stand-ups. Jeff Caldwell has appeared as the host of ESPN’s “Sports Figures” and as a stand-up performer on many shows including Metro Channel’s “New Joke City with Robert Klein,” ESPN’s “The Lighter Side of Sports,” A&E’s “An Evening at the Improv” and CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman.” Brad Trackman is a NYC comedian who has made national TV appearances on NBC’s “Later” and “Friday Night,” CBS’s “Star Search” and Comedy Central’s “Heroes of Jewish Comedy.” He manages to be hilarious yet remain squeaky clean.
