Graydon Pool plans include cleaner water, no concrete
by John Koster The Graydon Pool Committee recently told the full village council the proposed plan for Graydon in 2010 includes cleaner water through better filtration and coarse sand, improved membership recruitment, and improved services. However, the original Ridgewood Pool Committee’s proposal for a multi-pool complex, water rides, and other appurtenances is not part of this year’s plans. Councilman Patrick Mancuso, who chairs the Graydon Pool Committee, made the presentation with the support of Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Director Tom Cronin. Mancuso did not mention either side of the issue, but the plan he outlined echoes the position of the Save Graydon group. Save Graydon had asserted that turning the lakelike pool into a multi-pool complex would be unaesthetic and expensive, and the real answer is improved filtration and better outreach to attract more swimmers and picnickers to relieve a deficit that last year reached $130,000. “The water quality this year has been better than at any time in past memory, but memberships have declined this year and membership concerns continue,” Mancuso told the rest of the council, speaking from the floor rather than the dais. Cronin said the cleaner water quality was due to an improved water purification catalyst and coarser sand,
and that both policies would continue. He concurred that more pool members are necessary to make the operation economically viable, but said he believes an outreach to Midland Park and Ho-Ho-Kus would help attract more members. “I think 99 percent of it is do-able in this year’s budget,” Cronin told the council. The governing body took action by adopting an ordinance that gives early members a $10 discount. Graydon members who join before May 22 this year may obtain a new adult membership for $77, a new child membership for $67, a renewal adult membership for $72, and a renewal (continued on page 8)
