March 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Ridgewood ‘Peter and the Wolf’ to be presented by RSO Through the compositional artistry and imagination of Sergei Prokofiev, a young Russian boy by the name of Peter will meet a dangerous and witless wolf in Ridgewood on March 28 at 4 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School, courtesy of the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra. Prokofiev’s classic symphonic story of Peter and his animal friends and their encounter with a very hungry and aggressive wolf has become an international staple of the symphonic repertoire. The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra is fortunate to have Edward Pleasant, actor and singer, as the narrator of this charming story. Prokofiev was commissioned in early 1936 to write a symphony for children. Today, it is probably Prokofiev’s most widely performed and best loved composition. He used a varied cast of animal and human characters, all given voice by various instruments in the orchestra. The strings are Peter, the French horns play the wolf, the flute is the bird, the clarinet the cat, the oboe the duck, the bassoon the grandfather, and the hunters’ gunshots are musically represented by the timpani and the bass drum. Along with the Prokofiev piece, the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will play compositions by Dukas, Bloch, Gounod, and Dargomyzhski. This concert is suitable for families. Tickets purchased in advance are $20 for regular admission, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. Door prices are $23, $18, and $13.
