March 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Glen Rock Emergency services, residents weather recent storm by John Koster Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren said a strong performance by police and road crews and resident cooperation got the borough through some serious storm damage with a relative minimum of hardship for homeowners. “I have a lot of concern for the people who are still without power and we’re working on it, but I have to day that we got off easy compared to some other towns,” van Keuren said Wednesday. An estimated 80 percent of Glen Rock homes lost electrical power for about 20 hours – Saturday night to early Sunday night – and a number of houses were out for several days. Perhaps the worst problem in terms of the community as a whole came when a huge tree fell across Maple Avenue, the main thoroughfare between Route 208 in Fair Lawn and Route 17 in Paramus. The fallen tree, which knocked out nearby power lines, closed the section of Maple Avenue between Ackerman Avenue and Rock Road for three days. The detours turned traffic on Rock Road and Ackerman Avenue into chronic traffic jams at each morning and afternoon rush hour until Public Service Electric and Gas removed the fallen tree. The Glen Rock Library was spared, and was opening during regular hours Sunday, though a transformer failure knocked out the electricity for a few hours Monday night and computer services were down for two days. “We had a fine performance by the police, the road department, and emergency services, and neighbor helping neighbor was also important,” Mayor van Keuren said. Glen Rock lost about 30 trees, the mayor added, some of them giants that will take a generation to replace. About 15 percent of the homes and businesses in the borough still had no power three days after the storm, but repair work continued. League sponsors forum for candidates The League of Women Voters of Glen Rock will hold a Candidates’ Night forum for the Glen Rock Board of Education on Tuesday, April 6, in the gymnasium at Central School, 600 Maple Avenue, at 7:30 p.m. The candidates will present their views on the issues in response to questions posed by the audience. The four candidates, Jacquelyn Johnson, Carlo Cella III, Sheldon Hirschberg, and Sanjiv Ohri are vying for three three-year seats. The election is scheduled for April 20.
