Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 24, 2010 Ridgewood High School Asian Festival program to aid Haiti Proceeds from Ridgewood High School’s Saturday, March 27 Asian Festival program will benefit the Doctors Without Borders effort to relieve the suffering in Haiti. Tickets for this benefit performance are $5 for adults and high school students, and $3 for middle school and elementary school students. The Saturday program is open to parents, siblings, and the general public and will be held at 7 p.m. at Ridgewood High School. The show will feature student performances of traditional and modern dances, martial arts, and skits from Japan, Korean, India, China, and the Philippines. Students and parents provide their own costumes. Some non-Asian students take part in the show and others help operate the audio-visual equipment and lighting. Big hits of the show include Korean dancing and drumming, the Japanese shrine parade and taiko drumming, the Chinese lion dance, choreographed kendo-kumbo fighting with wooden swords in the Japanese and Korean mode, high-flying tae kwon do Korean martial arts, the elegant Korean fan dance, and highly athletic dances from India and the Philippines. The modern dances and the fashion show are also popular attractions. Award-winning Ridgewood High School teacher Helen Aslanides is the faculty advisor. The student coordinators are Courtney Ayukawa and Yoon-Ji Nam. The Asian Festival will also be offered for Ridgewood High School students only during the school day on Friday. J.
