Knapp makes case for one-side parking ordinance
by John Koster Former Glen Rock Deputy Mayor Carol Knapp spoke at last week’s public council meeting to urge Glen Rock’s governing body to consider an ordinance that would mandate one-side parking on streets that are less than 24 feet wide. Knapp said that twice in the past few days she had experienced serious problems slipping her own car between a standard car and an SUV parked on opposite sides of the road. “It seems to be some sort of Murphy’s Law that if one car parks on one side of the street, another car parks just on the opposite side,” Knapp said. Council Members Mike O’Hagan and Joan Orseck agreed that they had encountered similar situations, and Mayor John van Keuren concurred that the problem was worth some consideration. The council also agreed to look into a request by Jim Seaton. This resident, who frequently speaks at council meetings, noted that most of the windfall trees during the storm earlier in the week had been oaks, and that oaks notoriously have a small underground root system compared to their crowns. Seaton urged that some other species of trees should be used to replace windfalls. In other business, the council voted to spend $575,000 on maintenance projects, including repair of the children’s pool, road resurfacing, and several smaller items. The pool work was to cost $40,000 and the road resurfacing was priced at $335,000, but the State of New Jersey is expected to rebate Glen Rock $200,000 of the road resurfacing money.
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LEADER IN CONTEMPORARY VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT
Shir Appeal, an a cappella group from Tufts University, recently made an appearance at Glen Rock Jewish Center. The group presented an afternoon concert for children and one in the evening for teens and adults. The group’s repertoire included contemporary Israeli songs, liturgical music, Jewish-themed English language songs, and a sing-along finale with the audience. The concerts were arranged by Rabbi Neil Tow, a Tufts University graduate and Shir Appeal charter member, and GRJC Men’s Club President Robert Weiss.
