March 17, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Ridgewood Council approves ordinance to limit officers by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council has adopted an ordinance that limits the number of police seniors and police offi- cers on the force at any given time. The council voted the measure with four approvals and one abstention. Deputy Mayor Keith Killion, a former police captain and head of the detective bureau, abstained from voting as he had promised he would on police matters during his election campaign. The ordinance provides for “two captains, not more than four lieutenants, not more than five sergeants and not more than 30 police officers or detectives on the force at any one time. “In the event the (Ridgewood) Village Council determines not to appoint the maximum number of sergeants permitted herein, then the number of officers/ detectives may increase, at the discre- tion of the village council, by the difference between the number of sergeants appointed and the maximum number of five sergeants permitted by this ordinance.” The vote took place without discussion or comment from the floor. The Ridgewood Village Council is still negotiating a somewhat similar position with Ridgewood’s paid fire department. The proposal would eliminate the position of deputy chief. Neither side wished to discuss details of this ordinance.
