March 17, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Glen Rock Glen Rock resident Blanca Cubias, activity assistant at Heritage Manor Nursing Home at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, was recently named Activity Professional of the Year by the New Jersey Activities Professional Association, a professional organization for activity professionals working with geriatric and physically challenged populations in health care settings. “Ms. Cubias’ outstanding service to the patients in our post-acute care unit has absolutely promoted a positive image of the activities profession,” said Alison Argott, Heritage Manor activities director, who nominated Cubias for the award. “Her caring nature and positive attitude make her a favorite among both patients and staff. She loves her job and it shows in all that she does.” Cubias came from Colombia by herself 12 years ago without any command of the Resident named Activity Professional of Year English language. She dreamed of having a better life in America and started out by cleaning houses. She later was hired for a housekeeping position at CHCC, but her goal was to work in activities. One and a half years ago, she had the opportunity to join the activities staff and has excelled in that position. She has a gift for engaging the patients in all that they do. Her respect and compassion for them is unsurpassed. Patients in the post-acute care unit are often facing major life changes, such as having to give up their home and move to an assisted-living residence upon discharge. They are anxious about what the future will hold for them. Therefore, Cubias developed a program called Planning Your Future, which is a support group that she co-leads with the social work director to address their concerns and alleviate their anxieties. It has proven to be a successful program.
