Council pulls ordinances on paid parking for study
by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council pulled two ordinances on paid parking due to objections about constraints on parking at Graydon Pool and a proposed fee of $425 per school year for Ridgewood High School students at the Graydon lots. The ordinances had already been pulled for further study when several teachers and parents of younger children spoke at the council meeting. Those who spoke said that charging fees for parking at Graydon was sending the wrong message to high school students and families with younger children. Council members had also heard these messages by e-mail or letter and said they wanted to discuss the ordinances further before deciding whether to introduce them. One ordinance would have established permit parking in the Graydon North and Graydon South lots from 7 a.m. until 3
p.m. Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 through June 25. The ordinance would also have established 16 spaces in the Graydon South lot with two-hour parking restrictions and an escalating schedule to be enacted as part of the ordinance. The second ordinance would have established a $425 fee per school year for Ridgewood High School students at both the Graydon South and Graydon North parking lots. The Graydon lots on either side of Linwood Avenue function as backup parking lots for the larger lot behind Ridgewood Village Hall and the Ridgewood Parking Library, both of which sometimes experience parking crunches during programs at the library and sports events at Veterans Field. Another factor is revenue: Ridgewood, like the other towns in Northwest Bergen County, is seeking all viable means of increasing revenue without a negative impact on the quality of life.

The Ridgewood Police Department has reported a number of electronic-based frauds and one house burglary during the first week of March. On March 2, a West Glen Avenue resident reported that she had received a letter telling her she had won $8,000. The letter contained a check for $998 and instructions for her to cash the check and mail the money to the company. When she attempted to do so, the bank told her the check was fraudulent. Another resident reported on March 2 that someone else had used her credit card to make $810 worth of purchases during the month of January.
Police report fraud, burglary
On March 5, a Ridgewood man reported that he had met a woman on a dating website and she agreed to visit him if he sent her $700 by Western Union. He sent the money, but the woman never showed up. Western Union reported that a man had cashed the check in Mississippi. On March 8, a Walnut Street resident reported that he and his family had returned from vacation to find that their home had been burglarized. A laptop, jewelry, and a coin collection had been stolen. The theft is under investigation by the Ridgewood Detective Bureau and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department. J. KOSTER
