Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 10, 2010 Ridgewood Notes HILT announces activities Dr. Donato Fornuto, professor emeritus of music at William Paterson University, will present “Rodgers & Hart and Rodgers & Hammerstein” at the March 11 meeting of Highlights in Leisure Time. The program will be held at 1 p.m. at the Community Center at Ridgewood Village Hall, and is open to the public. Dr. Fornuto will trace the development of Rodgers’ career from his earliest songs to the blockbuster musicals written with Oscar Hammerstein. Biographical information, anecdotes, and recorded examples will round out this educational and entertaining talk. HILT members are invited to come at noon for the social. Attendees are asked to bring a sandwich, coffee and dessert are provided. This Horizons Speakers Bureau Program is offered by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, free and open to the public. On March 18, HILT will travel to the American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark and lunch at Casa Di Calabria in Haledon. A docent from the Paterson Museum will board the bus for a tour of the highlights of the Historic Paterson Silk City. The luncheon will be served family style and includes various Italian appetizers and a choice of entrees, dessert, and coffee. The bus will leave Graydon Pool Parking Lot at 9:45 a.m. (boarding begins at 9:30 a.m.) and returns at approximately 4 p.m. The cost for the trip is $35 for members and $40 for non-members. Checks should be made payable to HILT. All Ridgewood residents 55 and older are invited to join HILT. Annual membership dues are $15. Monthly meetings include entertainment and/or informational presentations followed by refreshments. Future trips include visits to NJPAC for the New Jersey Symphony, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill Cottage and lunch at the Culinary Institute of America, and a ride on the Water Gap Trolley followed by lunch at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn. Dinosaur Fossil and Mineral Camp set Dinosaurs Rock Fossil and Mineral Camp will be offered by the Ridgewood Parks & Recreation Department for students in kindergarten through grade five on Friday, April 9. The program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Stable. Participants will see and touch a largescale museum-quality exhibit of dinosaur and fossil specimens. Hands-on activities include breaking open crystal-filled geodes, panning for genuine gemstones, and excavating real fossils like dinosaur bones and shark teeth. Register for tennis instruction Registration is currently underway for the early spring session of tennis instruc- tion by All Pro Tennis for both youth and adults. Classes will begin the week of April 15. Participants are grouped according to age and experience and will learn the proper stance, tennis terminology, technique, game rules, and strategy. Youth classes are offered on either Thursdays or Fridays at the Bellair Tennis Courts. Adult classes are offered on Friday mornings at the Somerville Tennis Courts. YWCA to offer Red Cross Lifeguard training The YWCA of Bergen County is offering its next American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course beginning March 9, and runs through April 15. Students must take and pass a swim test, which will be held on March 3 at 7 p.m. Participants must be 15 years of age or older and a $10 swim test fee is due at registration. This course prepares students with the CPR, first aid and lifeguard techniques necessary for employment as a professional lifeguard. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood. Fee for the course is $315. The YWCA of Bergen County offers a variety of American Red Cross certified programs throughout the year, including swimming lessons for ages six to adult. Game Day/Fashion Show fundraiser set The Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will host a Game Day and Fashion Show on March 24. Ridgewood Symphony celebrates 70th anniversary The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra (RSO) will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a festive dinner and fashion show on Saturday March 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 105 Cottage Place, Ridgewood. A variety of delicious dishes will be contributed by fine area restaurants and models will be sporting fashions from Ridgewood’s clothing stores and boutiques. RSO Dinner and Fashion Show tickets are $50 per person and are available at Oliver’s Chocolates, 46 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood. Pre-reserved tables for eight to 10 guests cost $40 per ticket. RSO is one of the longest uninterrupted tenures for a full-sized community orchestra in the country.
