Fundraiser participants earned pledges for each day they did not eat junk food, and donated the funds to disaster relief on the earthquake ravaged island. “Sixth grade teachers and students at Benjamin Franklin Middle School have recently decided they wanted to make a difference too,” said Casey Gervolino, one of the sixth graders. “They put together the idea of earning pledges from friends, family, teachers, and students to see how many days they could go without eating junk food.” The students and teachers defined junk Students collect $8,000 for orphanage in Haiti food as chips that are not baked, any type of candy, desserts, sweet drinks, fried food, and gum with sugar. The junk food boycott lasted 10 days for students in the two sixth grade classes that were involved. “Students became so involved that many even decided to donate extra money,” Gervolino said. “The money will go straight to an orphanage in Haiti that needs our help. This orphanage already had many children in it, but after the earthquake it became packed with children in need who had lost their parents.” The students were pleased to have done something to help people in desperate need and to promote healthier eating at the same time.
