WICS to host Blood Drive The Glen Rock Women in Community Service will host a Blood Drive on March 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Central School gymnasium, 600 Maple Avenue. WICS members will call residents who have previously donated to set up appointments. However, new donors are always needed. Anyone in good health, aged 17-75, and weighing 110 pounds or more, is usually able to donate. Donors should eat a moderate meal prior to giving blood and must bring identification with them. Babysitting will be provided at Central School during the event. After giving blood, donors are asked to rest briefly and have some homemade refreshments. Donors will receive a card indicating his or her blood type, which can be very useful in emergencies. The entire donor process takes about 45 minutes. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Jackson novel topic at book group Enter the world of an alternate present or a parallel universe on Tuesday, March 18 when the Tea & Talk at Two Book Group at the Glen Rock Library discusses “Half Life” by Shelley Jackson. Multiple copies of the book are now available at the reference desk. New members are invited to join this informal discussion on the third Tuesday of every month. Call (201) 670-3970. Jackson’s novel centers on an alternate-universe version of America. Conjoined twins have become relatively commonplace, probably due to radioactive fallout (although activists claim that history covered up the fact that many prominent people were conjoined, including Copernicus and Mark Twain). The story is a clever and surprisingly moving exploration of identity and connectedness. Koster to address Activities Club “Custer Survivor” author John Koster will address the Activities Club at the Tuesday, March 16 meeting at 1:30 p.m. Koster will relate the true happenings at the Little Big Horn, and expound on the survival of Frank Finkle, a German-American farm boy who was a sergeant in Custer’s detachment. The meeting will be held at the Community Church in Glen Rock a social coffee time, at 1 p.m., will precede the speaker. The Activities Club is a group of retired and semiretired men from Glen Rock and the surrounding communities involved in social, athletic, volunteer, and intellectual activities.
