Ordinance to require ID stickers for truss construction
by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council will require the owners of buildings with truss construction in their ceilings or under their floors to affix stickers to these buildings as a warning to Ridgewood’s professional firefighters and their adjunct volunteers. Truss construction has been cited as the cause of death for a number of firefighters due to the added danger of structural collapse. One incident in Hackensack killed a number of fire fighters when a truss roof collapsed and trapped them inside the burning building. A few years later, a warning by a Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department officer led his fire fighters to evacuate a burning building on Wyckoff Avenue a few moments before that building’s truss roof collapsed. The warning was credited with saving a number of fire fighters from death or serious injury. The Ridgewood ordinance received support from Fire Chief James Bombace, who said similar requirements are being promulgated around the state, and from residents Boyd Loving and Roger Wiegand, who asked how much it would cost. Chief Bombace said the Ridgewood Fire Department already knows about most of the existing structures with truss construction, and the only cost would be for the stickers. New buildings would receive sticker requirement notification when the building inspector approves them for occupancy. “I think this is a very good ordinance and could possibly save some lives,” Wiegand said. “I believe this is a very useful ordinance, very appropriate to the safety of the firefighters in this community.” Loving concurred. The council approved the introduction unanimously.
In other business, the council approved a volunteer tuition credit program for emergency medical and firefighter volunteers, to be administered by Village Manager Ken Gabbert and carried out under New Jersey state auspices at no expense to the Ridgewood municipal government. The council also voted the formal defeat of an ordinance to establish a table of organization for the Ridgewood Fire Department, but only so that negotiations between the council and Chief Bombace and the firefighters can continue to draft an ordinance both sides support.
