Manager reports more county funds for Schedler site
by John Koster
Ridgewood Village Manager Ken Gabbert recently advised the Ridgewood Council that Bergen County Open Space has approved another $600,000 to defray the $2.7 million cost of the Schedler Property located on the east side of Route 17. Gabbert said his administration will investigate further grants, but pointed out that this new grant brings outside contributions for the purchase of the Schedler property to $1.6 million. The rest of the money was bonded because the council consensus was that the property was too important to let slide. The Ridgewood Council voted to buy the secondgrowth woodlot and abandoned house from the estate of the last owner because open land in Ridgewood is at risk. However, the council acknowledged that money was tight. The future of the house, an heirloom to some and an eyesore to others, has not yet been determined,
but asbestos removal was approved at a previous council meeting. Council members previously cautioned local sports and recreation groups not to anticipate development of the Schedler site into fields or playgrounds in the near future. The money is not available for these projects, they said. Deputy Mayor Keith Killion in particular had stated that fields would not be developed until some mode of reaching the Schedler site without running across Route 17 had been developed. Killion, a former police captain and lifelong Ridgewood resident, warned that impulsive youngsters who could not get rides to any hypothetical recreation fields on the site might endanger their own lives. Ridgewood’s first open space purchase, the Habernickel property, has been approved for development into a mixed use: sports fields on the pasture land near Hillcrest Avenue; and trails, some of them ADA-accessible, on the sloping part of the 10-acre site, which was once
a boarding farm for horses. Two houses on the land are now rented on a year-to-year basis at fair market prices.
