Ridgewood
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli has announced the arrest of Rocco John Benedetto, a 36-yearold Mahwah man, in connection with a fatal motor vehicle accident in Ridgewood. On June 11 at approximately 1:53p.m., Ridgewood police responded to numerous 911 calls of a three car collision, which had occurred on Route 17 South, near the exit for East Saddle River Road. Upon arrival, police found 80year-old Dorothy E. Scordato of Allendale still behind the wheel of her 2005 Honda Element. She was rushed from the scene by emergency personnel and transported to the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. Scordato died a short time after her arrival at the hospital. The ensuing investigation revealed that Scordato’s vehicle was struck by a 2009 Mercedes Benz driven by Benedetto as both vehicles traveled south on Route 17, near the exit for East Saddle River Road. This collision sent Scordato’s vehicle out of control and across several lanes of Route 17, where it was struck by a 2008 Honda Civic driven by a 20-year-old New York woman, who was neither charged criminally nor summonsed.
Mahwah man arrested in connection with fatal accident
According to the investigation, following the collision, Benedetto continued south on Route 17 for approximately one half mile before exiting the highway and calling police about the collision. Benedetto was transported to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, where it was determined that he was under the influence. He was taken to Valley Hospital where a blood sample was drawn. Accordingly, Benedetto was charged with one count of second degree vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, and
being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance. Bail was set by the Honorable Judge Harry Carroll at $150,000, no 10 percent option. Prosecutor Molinelli stated that Benedetto is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Molinelli thanked the Ridgewood Police Department and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bergen County Sheriff Department for their assistance with this investigation.
