Council will not seek Graydon Pool proposals
by John Koster “My decision tonight, in response to the committee, is not to make any recommendation to send out RFPs (requests for proposals) for three reasons: there is no money, there is no money, there is no money,” Ridgewood Councilman Patrick Mancuso said at last week’s public meeting. Mancuso underlined what had been a tacit conclusion of the council some weeks ago: Funding to bond and construct a $10-million multi-pool complex in place of Graydon Pool is not in the cards because the money is not in the bank. Requests for proposals – urged at a recent council meeting by one of the proponents at least for future focus – were not of any use considering the economy that has already led to 27 layoffs of municipal staffers. Mancuso spoke after a statement by Sally Brandes, one of the proponents of keeping Graydon natural-looking and cleaning the water through better filtration, rather than renovating the entire lake-like pool to what objectors called “a water park.” Mancuso, who chaired the group that tried to achieve dialogue between the group that wanted a new pool complex and the other group that wanted a sand-bottom pool with cleaner water, asked Brandes to confirm that he had
not asked her to be there – because his brief comments concurred almost completely with the resident’s more detailed analysis. “What could we provide at this point?” Brandes asked. “I think the mandate has to be clear on what issues we’re trying to solve.” Brandes said Graydon in its present form was one of the few municipally funded facilities that senior citizens could enjoy other than the general park system. She said it was insulting to mature residents to try to insist on making Graydon entirely self-sustaining when this condition is not (continued on page 8)
