Stadulis awarded scholarship Ryan Thomas Stadulis of Glen Rock was recently awarded a New Jersey Association of REALTORS® Educational Foundation award, the Stefanik Family Award in memory of Gertrude Stefanik. Awards were presented to 37 recipients at The Pines in Edison. Scholarships are given to high school seniors who will be attending and undergraduate four-year institution, students currently enrolled in undergraduate four-year institution, and students pursuing graduate studies in real estate or related fields. Students are selected based on criteria such as academic achievements, financial needs, interest in real estate endeavors, and contributions to family, school and community. Gladwell book to be discussed Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference,” will be discussed at the Tea at Two on Tuesday Book Group on Tuesday, June 16. The group will meet at 2 p.m. at the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road. This will be the last Tea at Two Book Discussion until the fall. Gladwell offers a theory of social dynamics that is bound to provoke a shift in understanding of mass behavioral change. Defining the abrupt drop in crime on New York’s subways and the unexpected popularity of a novel as “epidemics,” Gladwell searches for catalysts that precipitate the “tipping point” that generates those events. After analyzing a number of psychological studies, he finds that tipping points are attributable to minor alterations in the environment, such as the eradication of graffiti, and the actions of a surprisingly small number of people who fit the profiles of personality types that he terms connectors, mavens, and salespeople. As he applies his counterintuitive hypotheses to everything from the popularity of certain children’s television shows to the spread of disease, Gladwell reveals that
the belief in the autonomy of the self is based in great part on wishful thinking. Multiple copies of Gladwell’s book are available at the library’s reference desk. Seniors plan racetrack trip The Glen Rock Senior Citizens Club will visit Monmouth Racetrack on Friday, June 18. A buffet luncheon at the Turf Club is included and jackets are required for gentleman. Library offers reusable tote bags The Glen Rock Public Library is offering reusable library tote bags at the circulation desk for $2 each. Patrons can now protect borrowed items from snow and rain with reusable library totes. The library is joining the Green Up Glen Rock movement by making these bags available to patrons. The library has long been promoting recycling by allowing patrons to reuse books, recorded books, music, and videos. Some items have been borrowed more than 100 times. They are now expanding the green effort by allowing patrons to recycle by using library totes. The library will no longer supply plastic bags. Reusable totes will be the only option. Tote bag sales are self-supporting. The Glen Rock Library is located at 315 Rock Road. Seniors plan trips The Glen Rock Senior Citizens Club has planned two summer trips. Free trees available to borough homeowners The Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee has announced that borough residents may now request free trees. Trees will be planted in the right-of-way along the streets in front of their homes. While trees are being planted in November, the committee will be evaluating residents’ request forms as they are submitted and determining priority for planting. The top priority will be for trees on sides of streets without electrical wires. Second priority will go to locations on the side of the street where electrical lines are located, but where trees can be planted farther away from the street and not directly under the lines. Tree request forms are available at Glen Rock Borough Hall. Residents may send their e-mail address to GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail.com and an electronic version of the form will be sent to then.
