Glen Rock
June 16, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 13
The Glen Rock political primary showed no surprises this year as the two Republican incumbents were endorsed, no Democrats ran in that party’s primary, and none of the write-in candidates received more than a single vote. Mary Jane Surrago, active in the emergency medical services, and Mike O’Hagan, active in sports and anything connected with the safety of Glen Rock’s children, were the only primary candidates fielded by either side.
Republican candidates receive voters’ endorsement
Surrago, who has long worked in the ambulance services, received 217 votes. O’Hagan received 215 votes. O’Hagan’s speed bump campaign to slow motorists prompted a similar program on Broad Street in Ridgewood, where speed bump advocates cited Glen Rock as an example of a community where the community cared about all of its citizens.
Honor a 2010 graduate with a tree
The Glen Rock Tree Trust suggests parents and friends to commemorate graduation with a tree. For a donation of $200, the Glen Rock Tree Trust will plant a tree at a school or on public property. The gift can be from one family or a group of families – and smaller gifts are welcome. The student(s) being honored will receive certificates indicating that a donation has been made. Donors may give their tree location preferences. Trees will be planted along with the next borough planting in late October or early November. Donations may be sent to borough hall, marked Glen Rock Tree Trust. The donation form may be obtained at borough hall, the Glen Rock Public Library, or by e-mailing GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail.com.
John Hahn, who advocated a reduction of the police force at a recent council meeting, and Irene Brown, a frequent of senior citizens, each received a single write-in vote. Surrago and O’Hagan are both liked and respected by voters for their patent honesty and perennial volunteerism, but the key factor in the low turnout is that the Democrats did not run any candidates this year. A few years ago, the Glen Rock Borough Council was split 3/3 with either an Independent or a Republican as mayor, but attrition reduced the Democratic presence on the Glen Rock Council to 5-1. J.
