Council plans to ‘go green’ the old fashioned way
by John Koster Glen Rock officials have long advocated “going green” and, at last week’s public council meeting, Mayor John van Keuren and two residents discussed ways to accomplish this goal the old-fashioned way – with plenty of new trees to replace those that have died or have fallen in storms. Leslie Kameny, head of the Glen Rock Shade Tree Committee, thanked municipal workers for their help in re-planting some of the fallen or damaged trees and urged residents who had the necessary private property to plant two trees for every one had lost so Glen Rock could maintain its beneficial and beautiful tree canopy. Mayor van Keuren thanked Kameny and the committee for the work, but the suggestion that planting two trees for every one that had fallen brought an informed rebuttal from Jim Seaton, who reiterated his recent critique of recent tree planting techniques. Seaton, a lifetime resident of Glen Rock, said borough policy had generally been to plant large shade trees 30 to 40 feet apart so the shade trees did not crowd one another out when they reached maturity. He added that, while shade is desirable, some sunlight is also desirable to facilitate lawns, gardening, and other landscaping. Recently, Seaton said, he had seen some borough-planted trees set 10 feet apart, which would lead to crowding if and when the large trees matured and reached full height. “I don’t know why this neglect has come into being -that nobody takes into account the spacing between trees,” Seaton told the council. He added that some of the newly planted trees also had not been properly rooted. “The persons dealing with the trees made a very poor decision,” Kameny admitted after listening to Seaton. She said the markers the Shade Tree Committee had set out had
originally spaced the trees substantially as Seaton had suggested, but the markers had sometimes disappeared before the planting was done. Seaton added that tree species and spacing were important factors. He noted that many of the replacement trees are oaks, and that oaks, originally forest trees, have poor root systems and tap roots, and do not survive as well as maples or other species when subjected to heavy wind when their root systems have been circumscribed by pavement. Mayor van Keuren also asked all residents of Glen Rock to report which trees on municipal property in their own neighborhoods appear to be dying or dead, saying he had seen some ugly trees while driving around town. Kameny said that analyzing which trees had to go and which should be saved was a job for a professional, but she added that the Shade Tree Committee is always willing to listen to advice from residents.
