Markstein, nee Pouch, of Waldwick died May 29. She was 79. Bert Nelson of Ridgewood, formerly of Ringwood, West Milford, and Barefoot Bay, Florida, died June 2. He was 85. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Before retiring, he was an auditor with Hartford Insurance in Randolph. He was a former member of Saint Catherine of Bologna R.C. Church in Ringwood. He is survived by his children Jacque Weiss, Pennie DeVore, and Candy Krulan, four grandchildren, and his sister Arlene Lehnert. He was predeceased by his wife Joan T. (nee Dannic). O’Connor, nee Roti, of Ridgewood died April 2. She was 92. Before retiring in 1990, she had been the school nurse at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Ridgewood for 25 years. She had been the supervisor of pediatrics at Christ Hospital in Jersey City from 1938 to 1948. She had been an active member at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood for over 50 years. She is survived by her children Robert of New York, Francis (Hank) of Ridgewood, Deborah Dunphy of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Raymond of River Vale, and Stephen of Driggs, Idaho, and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Robert J. O’Connor, and her sister Katherine (Kay) Roti. A memorial visitation will be held at C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood on Friday, June 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 12 at 10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood. Walter Edward Perdue of Anna Maria, Florida, formerly of Ridgewood, died May 3. He was 79. He owned and operated Perdue’s Sport Shop in Ridgewood. He was member of the Class of 1949 from Ridgewood High School. He was among the first inductees into the Ridgewood High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He is survived by his wife Barbara Voorman Perdue, his children Beth Perdue Sontag of Ringwood, and Mitchell Perdue of Ridgewood, two grandchildren, and his siblings Jean Perdue deGruchy of Ridgewood, and William Perdue of Plano, Texas. Taten Anastasia Thoelen Ridgewood Councilwoman Anne Zusy has died at the age of 58 following a battle with lung cancer. Zusy died just a few days after the death of her father, Fred Zusy, a veteran newsman with the Associated Press. A council member for two years, Zusy was elected with Keith Killion and Paul Aronsohn to a four-year term in Ridgewood’s non-partisan council election. Born in Cairo and raised partly in Istanbul, Zusy attended the University of Maryland and had worked in journalism at the New York Times and for the Associated Press. She was also a freelance writer and contributor to a number of local newspapers. Her death was regretted by council members and other public figures who applauded her energy and forthright support of causes she espoused. Zusy was former president of the Federated Home and School Association and the George Washington Home and School Association, an avid gardener with a keen interest in the environment, and a strong advocate of affordable housing in Ridgewood. She was elected as Ridgewood’s Volunteer of the Year for 2006, worked with the Ridgewood Youth Council and Youth Advisory Committee, and was a long-time advocate of the Ridgewood Community Center, which is located on the ground floor of Ridgewood Village Hall. She also served on the Ridgewood Planning Board. She is survived by her husband Al Ortiz, her son Alex Ortiz, and her daughters Elizabeth and Katherine.
