With fine arts programs being downsized or eliminated as school budgets are cut, parents are wondering how to fill the gap in their children’s education without breaking their own budgets. Parents and students who wish to learn about the programs offered by The Ridgewood Conservatory are invited to visit the June 12 Open House, which will be held between 2 and 5 p.m. at the conservatory at 615 Franklin Turnpike in Ridgewood, across from the Valleau Cemetery. This summer, The Ridgewood Conservatory has introduced a number of new programs designed to provide a wide variety

of opportunities for children and teens to come together and explore the arts by working with well-known performing artists. Transforming its recital space into a full dance studio under the direction of American Ballet Theater-trained dancer Lisa Giannone, TRC will be offering both private ballet instruction and one-week Ballet Intensive Workshops this summer. For those who love to sing, dance and act, TRC has created two On-Stage Workshops, both of which will run for two weeks this summer. In “Glee at TRC!” students will work with pop/jazz singer Sherma Andrews, whose credits include touring with Britney Spears and Enrique Inglesias, and hip-hop dancer/choreographer Erin Carafello to recreate numbers from the pop culture hit TV show. In “TRC’s Triple Threat: CATS,” students will study voice and acting from well-known singer and actress Kathryn Zetto, whose credits include performing as Maria in “The Sound of Music” and TV roles on “All My Children.” Participants in this workshop will also learn Broadwaystyle choreography from Giannone. In addition to studying privately with TRC’s faculty of world-class virtuosi on a per-lesson basis over the summer, student-musicians are invited to join a number of week-long chamber music and jazz ensembles. Student cellists will have the opportunity to combine private cello intensives and master classes with famed cellist Arthur Cook. Children and teens who have always wanted to try percussion, or those who would like to explore African, Middle-

Eastern and Latin rhythms, are welcome to join two-week workshops with percussionist Laura Jordan. Rockers of all ages are invited to try introductory group classes, take rock guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, or vocal lessons, or join a two-week band workshop. Once-again, TRC is offering “Try an Instrument.” This three-lesson course is for students who want to try an instrument on for size before taking lessons. For its youngest students, TRC has created a new two-week day camp, “Nature and The Arts.” Children ages three through six can experience nature through music, dance, and art. In addition, both MiniMusic (birth through age six) and MiniDance (ages three through six) classes will be offered over the summer. Call (201) 612-6686 or visit RidgewoodConservatory.com.
