Students exhibit at Stable Gallery Students from the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation art classes are invited to exhibit their favorite pieces during the month of June at the Stable Gallery, 259 North Maple Avenue. Art classes currently offered include watercolors, acrylics, drawing, Chinese brush painting, charcoal and pastels, and art education. An artists’ reception will be held on Friday, June 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are invited to attend. The Stable Gallery is open for viewing weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Call the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Office at (201) 670-5560. Soccer registration extended Registration for the Ridgewood Soccer Association’s 2010 fall programs has been extended to June 1. The soccer season will begin Sept. 11 and conclude Nov. 20 with programs for all skill levels available for children and teens in grades one through 12. In-town programs are available for children in grades one through six. Travel programs are available for players in grades five through 12. Complete details about all RSA programs are available at www.ridgewoodsoccer.org. The popular co-ed high school program offers a great
way to meet and socialize with other high school students. Scrimmages are organized during the week and games are played on Sunday afternoons. The RSA also offers a special needs program which conducts sessions on Saturday afternoons. This program, designed for ages six through 14, develops skills and promotes physical fitness. All participants are paired with a coach-mentor from the Ridgewood High School Girls’ Soccer team and receive individualized attention in a small group setting. Registrations completed after June 1 will be assessed a $50 late fee and travel team players may be wait listed based on team availability. Questions can be addressed to registrar@ridgewoodsoccer.org. Golf camps offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation is offering summer golf camps through Total Golf Adventures of Bergen County. Programs will be available to village youth in kindergarten through grade eight. Participants will learn basics such as proper golf set-up, swing fundamentals, rules and etiquette, and scoring. Sessions are offered Monday through Thursday for three hours each day. Session I will be held July 12 through 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. Session II will be held Aug. 9 through 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Fridays for each session will be used for a rain day makeup.
All classes will take place at the Irene Habernickel Park on Hillcrest Road. The cost per student is $ 205. All equipment will be provided by Total Golf Adventures of Bergen County. Call (201) 670-5560 for details. Graydon Pool offers free weekend activities Graydon Pool will open on Saturday, June 5. Village residents are invited for a free opening weekend with entertainment, organized games, and gifts for children. Additional activities will include volleyball, basketball, bocce courts, ping-pong tables, shuffleboard, four-squares, and hopscotch. Amenities include a shaded playground, water features, shade kites, Adirondack chairs, a picnic area, sheltered pavilion, charcoal grills, and The Water’s Edge Café. June swim classes available This June, the YWCA Bergen County is offering several concentrated swim classes for teens and adults who are looking for short-term swim instruction options. Oneweek classes run the week of June 14 through 17; two-week classes also include June 21 through 24. All classes are held Monday through Thursday at 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood. The two-week classes are concentrated private lessons for ages four through adult; and Kindergarten Aqua Adventures, for ages five and six, an innovative class that combines 30 minutes of swim lessons with 30 minutes of fun pool activities that encourage kids to practice swim skills and build confidence. One-week classes are a pre-summer swim team workout for ages eight through 16, and concentrated group lessons for ages three through 12. The YWCA Bergen County offers a variety of American Red Cross certified swim programs throughout the year. HILT plans June activities Highlights in Leisure Time will host its annual picnic at Graydon Pool on Thursday, June 10 from noon to 2 p.m. (Rain date: Friday, June 11.) Refreshments will include hamburgers, frankfurters, and beverages. Only paid HILT members may attend. Call (201) 670-5560 to RSVP. HILT is sponsoring a day trip to Pennsylvania on Thursday, June 17. The day will include a narrated sightseeing tour of the Delaware Water Gap and Shawnee area on authentically styled trolleys. Lunch will follow at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn. Participants should note there will be a minimal amount of walking on this trip. Boarding of the bus will be permitted at 7:45 a.m. The group will depart from Graydon Pool at 8 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 for HILT members; $45 for nonmembers. Contact (201) 670-5560. Lifeguard training to begin The YWCA of Bergen County is offering an American Red Cross Concentrated Lifeguard Training course, which will begin June 8. Students must take and pass a swim test, which will be held June 2 at 7 p.m. Participants must be age 15 or older and a $10 swim test fee is due at registration. This five-day concentrated course prepares students with the CPR, first aid, and lifeguard techniques necessary for employment as a professional lifeguard. Classes will be held June 8, 10, 14, 15 and 16 from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood. The course fee is $350. Woman’s Guild offers musical program On Wednesday, June 2, at 1 p.m., the Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the public to an imaginary visit to the “Land of Make Believe.” The Blue Knights and Fair Ladies, a quintet from the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, will perform songs from “The Wizard of Oz.” The group’s repertoire includes popular show tunes and songs from the ‘30s to the ‘60s. A free will offering will be accepted. The event will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building, located at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South.
