July 28, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Glen Rock The Glen Rock Library reports that someone has been stealing videos from the shelves. More than 25 videos have been removed from their cases. Staff members have found the empty cases in other areas of the library, including the children’s area, reading room, and nonfiction shelves. “The empty cases started appearing the last week of school when there were only half days,” reported Lori Quinn, head of circulation and technical services. “The number of empty cases increased the next two weeks when school was out. There was a two-week lull, but now it’s starting again. The timing and the genre of the films, action, leads us to think that it’s a schoolage adolescent male,” Quinn speculated. Most of the titles will not be replaced due to lack of funding. The seriousness of the situation led the staff to call the police. Officer Adam Pyatak counseled the staff on how to set some hidden surveillance traps. In addition, Quinn created a display to alert library users who are browsing in the video area to keep their eyes open for people Borough’s library reports recent DVD thefts who do not walk to the checkout desk with the videos they have selected and to alert the staff. It is also hoped that residents will check their own houses for DVDs that are not in cases and return them. “We are not interested in pressing charges or punishing the person(s) responsible for the thefts,” said Quinn. “We only want two things to happen: that the thefts will stop and that the (DVDs) already stolen be returned, no questions asked.” The staff has discussed alternate methods of storing videos, such as removing the DVDs from the cases and storing the discs behind the desk. This will cause extra time at checkout because staff will have to search for the disc and insert it into the case before it can be borrowed. Another possible solution is to purchase lockable cases for each DVD. This is also time-consuming because each case has to be unlocked at the service desk one at a time. More than 15,000 videos have been borrowed the first six months of this year. If anyone has information about these thefts or wants additional information, call the library at (201) 670-3970. Empty DVD cases are displayed on the wall at the library. Wipers Streaking? Change Them Now! Allergies? Change The Cabin Air Filter! PROFESSIONAL Save Your Money!
