Ridgewood
Retiring teacher recognized
The Ridgewood Village Council has introduced an ordinance appropriating more than $1 million of mostly outside money to restore the access and appearance of the Ridgewood Train Station, an architectural landmark with its California Mission-style architecture that makes it somewhat unusual in New Jersey. The ordinance was introduced last week, and will be considered for adoption on Aug. 11. If approved, the ordinance would appropriate $376,000 from New Jersey Department of Transportation funds, $376,000 from Bergen County Open Space Trust Funds, and $38,720 from Ridgewood’s own capital improvement fund.
Plans for train station renovation now on track
In a separate funding vote, the Ridgewood Village Council also adopted a resolution to enter into a grant agreement with Bergen County for $389,130 in Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Funds which requires a dollar for dollar match by the Village of Ridgewood for the restoration of the roofs at the railroad station and the baggage rooms. The council introduced a separate ordinance to approve permit-authorized space for five two-wheeled motor vehicles at the station, with permits sold at $335 per calendar year on a first-come, first-served basis. Social studies teacher Fred Barbi, who taught in the Ridgewood Public Schools for a total of 41 years -- 34 years at Travell School and seven years at Benjamin Franklin Middle School -- was recently honored at a retirement dinner which included staff members and former staff members from each school. “Through the years it has been an honor and a privilege to work closely
with many outstanding educators,” Barbi said. “I am leaving Ridgewood on a high note. I feel a great sense of accomplishment in having touched the lives of a great number of Ridgewood children. Life is too short, and it is time for me to do other things that I enjoy.... spend time with family and friends, and support my wife who continues to work for Ridgewood Public Schools.”
Temple Israel’s religious school is now accepting applications for pre-kindergarten students for 2010-11. The new school year will begin Sept. 12. Taught by Tali Vogel, pre-kindergarten is open to children ages three and four and meets monthly on Sundays for two hours. Members and non-members are welcome. Pre-K studies focus on eight Jewish holidays. Through the use of stories, songs, and craft projects, youngsters learn as they have
fun. The classes will be held Sept. 12, Oct. 17, Nov. 21, Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 13, April 3, and May 2. Weekly classes for students in kindergarten through second grade are also open to children of members and non-members. For further information or for a school application, contact the director of education, Rabbi Sharon Litwin, at (201) 4449320. Temple Israel is located at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood.
