Art quilts on exhibit The “Make a Splash at the Library” theme this summer has been extended to include original works of art. The beautiful art quilts displayed in the library this summer are the work of Glen Rock resident Lynne Brotman. Brotman’s work combines a variety of fabrics, including cotton, silk, organza, mesh, and burlap. She hand-dyes many of the fabrics using various techniques such as Japanese Shibori, silk painting, oils, ink, and marbling. Many of the pieces are hand embellished with beads, paper, stamping, batiking, appliqué and thread painting. The library is located at 315 Rock Road. ESL classes suspended for summer ESL classes at the Glen Rock Library that are held on Monday afternoons have been cancelled for the summer. Classes will resume in September. Book group plans fall discussion The Glen Rock Library’s Neighbors Book Discussion group will be on hiatus until the first Monday in October. The October title for discussion will be “Call it Sleep” by Henry Roth. Protagonist David Schearl is an overwrought, phobic, and dangerously imaginative little boy. He has come to New York with his East European Jewish parents, and now, in the years between 1911 and 1913, he is exposed, shock by shock, to the blows of slum life. He is nurtured by his gentle, loving mother, terrorized by his father. When Roth published this debut novel in 1934, it was greeted with considerable critical acclaim, though, in those troubled times, lackluster sales. Books were hard to sell in the Depression years, and the novel quickly dropped out of sight. Only with its paperback publication in 1964 did the novel receive the recognition it deserves. “Call it Sleep” was the first paperback ever to be reviewed on the front page of The New York Times Book Review, and it proceeded to sell millions of copies both in the United States and around the world. For more information and to secure a copy of the book, contact the library at (201) 670-3970. Seniors plan trips The Glen Rock Senior Citizens Club has planned two summer trips. Seniors may travel to the Platzl Brauhaus Senior Festival on July 14 and enjoy the country air, dancing, music, bocce, bingo, miniature golf, swimming, or a game of cards. A light breakfast, buffet lunch, and a sit down dinner will be included. The cost of the trip is $43 for members; $46 for nonmembers. The bus will leave Wilde Park at 9:30 a.m. On Aug. 11, the seniors will visit Woodloch Pines in the Poconos. Participants will be offered a continental breakfast. The day will include a boat ride, bingo, entertainment, and a family-style lunch. The cost for members is $44; $47 for non-members. The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 8:30 a.m. For reservations, call (201) 445-9238. Free trees available to borough homeowners The Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee has announced that borough residents may now request free trees. Trees will be planted in the right-of-way along the streets in front of their homes. While trees are being planted in November, the committee will be evaluating residents’ request forms as they are submitted and determining priority for planting. The top priority will be for trees on sides of streets without electrical wires. Second priority will go to locations on the side of the street where electrical lines are located, but where trees can be planted farther away from the street and not directly under the lines. Tree request forms are available at the Glen Rock Borough Hall or by sending an e-mail request to GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail.com. Renewing interest in life’s joys To ease the pain of spinal stenosis, sciatica, and lumbar issues, Richard Kuiken received an epidural at a local hospital. He then selected The David F. Bolger Post-acute Care Unit (PACU) at Christian Health Care Center for his physical and occupational therapy. “I was in the PACU for about five weeks. The therapy was good, and the nursing staff was wonderful. My wife volunteers at Christian Health Care Center, and we know a lot of people who work there. Overall, I was impressed and pleased with the whole facility. It was good and clean and that is important to me. The dietitian was excellent. At the time I wasn’t eating very well. She evaluated me like I was her son. With the PACU’s therapy, I’m back to spending time as an amateur radio operator… I love speaking to people in foreign countries!” – Richard Kuiken Regain your lifestyle at the PACU.
