Area July 14, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 13 Summer may mean the end of school and time for play, but it also offers an exciting world of possibilities for reading. Huntington Learning Centers are inviting their students on a reading adventure! Reading Adventure builds on themes of discovery and exploration to dramatize how books can transport a reader to a new world. The first step is for the child to choose one or more books from the provided lists of books that highlight appropriate reading for each grade level. Giving children the ability to choose their books encourages them to read for pleasure based on their interests. The chosen books are entered into a “passport” and the journey begins. Once a book is read, the child completes a journal and receives a postcard for that book to motivate continued reading and most importantly, to have the child look to reading as a way of exploring new people, places and interests. “The Reading Adventure program was designed to not only encourage reading, but get students excited about it. Students and teachers discuss what they’ve read and Huntington has passport to a world of adventure the joy of reading becomes evident,” said Eileen Huntington, co-founder of Huntington Learning Center. “The investment of time and energy yields tremendous positive results in terms of improved reading ability.” The students’ hard work leads up to a celebration in honor of their achievements in the Reading Adventure program. Each student who participates in the program will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a trophy to commemorate their success in reading books for their enjoyment over the summer. “The success of the Reading Adventure program is as limitless as the child’s potential to expand his or her imagination,” Huntington said. “The program offers a chance for students to enhance their reading skills and then enter the new school year prepared.” For more information about Huntington Learning Center and the summer Reading Adventure program, contact Deirdre Nisbet, Huntington Learning Center of Ridgewood, (201) 447-1235. Four Ridgewood High School Latin Club members volunteered to take the Medusa Mythology Exam, an international mythology examination of legendary difficulty. The challenge is so daunting that this year the national average was only 21 correct responses out of 50 questions. The students worked for several months in preparation and all of them received awards. Participating students included Francesca Felder and Megan Felder (gold medals), Owen Rapaport (corona laurea), and Zoe Blecher-Cohen (bronze medal). The students are pictured here with Latin teacher Catherine Venturini.
