Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • July 14, 2010 Ridgewood Kings Pond, one of the lesser known parks in the Village of Ridgewood, offers a natural wildlife area, and nature trails around the Goffle Brook and the Kings Pond area. Over two weekends in June, Eagle Scout Candidate Christian Pajusi of BSA Troop 5 completed a service project to renovate a section of the lakeshore of Kings Pond. Pajusi coordinated teams of Boy Scouts, Ridgewood Wildscape Association members, and other neighborhood volunteers, who cleared the area of invasive weeds and trash. These volunteers, of all age groups, removed numerous wheelbarrow loads of weeds and trimmed the existing waterside shrubs so visitors to the park can now enjoy views of the Goffle Brook and Kings Pond from Lakeview Drive. Flowering viburnum shrubs were planted in the newly cleared area to prevent soil erosion. The Boy Scouts also removed bottles and cans, and discarded old tires, shopping carts, and other trash that littered the Goffle Brook. While working on this project, the Scouts and volunteers were able to observe numerous fish in the pond, a snapping turtle, a box turtle, wild ducks, song birds, and woodpeckers. The volunteers had wonderful spirit despite more than a few blisters and sore muscles. There was a close call where one Scout almost fell into Kings pond in his enthusiasm to get the project done. At the last moment, he was saved by fellow Scouts who pulled him back to the shore. Pajusi thanks the BSA Troop 5 and neighborhood volunteers for all their hard work and the Ridgewood Wildscape Association for their volunteers, advice, and financial support for this Kings Pond project. He also thanks Ridgewood Village Engineer Chris Rutishauser for helping with the project. Those interested in Ridgewood’s parks and wild areas may visit www.ridgewoodwildscape.org.
