Glen Rock January 27, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Council firm: No tax money for turf project by John Koster The Glen Rock Borough Council reaffirmed its commitment not to spend any tax dollars on the proposed artificial turf field proposed for part of Lower Doremus Park. At last week’s public council meeting, Mayor John van Keuren advised resident Jim Seaton that Glen Rock would not cosign any document to appropriate funds. The mayor noted that tax moneys would not be committed for the engineering study, which has been approved by the council with funds donated by the recreational sports groups. He added that, if the engineering review and test borings show the site is suitable, the borough still would not commit funds for the installation, which has an estimated $1.5 million price tag. “We’re awaiting the engineering reports and we don’t even know whether the site is going to support that sort of project,” van Keuren said last week. “We don’t even have the test borings yet.” The test borings, expected in six to eight weeks, will be entirely funded by the sports groups that donated the money to pay for them after the council declined to co-sign any financial documents late last year. Seaton mentioned that the proponents of the turf project said they intend to sell the dirt that would be excavated from the site, and pointed out that the dirt belonged to the taxpayers of Glen Rock. He said that any proceeds from the sale of the dirt should go back to the taxpayers and not to the sports groups. Response from the public had been mixed about the proposal to install artificial turf for all-weather play at Lower Doremus Park when the topic was first broached late last year. Sports advocates said the turf would take the pressure off their scheduling, while environmental advocates said that artificial turf recommended an ecological liability. However, the council’s decision not to commit any taxpayer money to the proposal won general approbation. Texas Hold ’em Fundraiser slated The Christopher Barron Live Life Foundation will host its first major fundraising event, a Men’s Night Texas Hold ‘em Tournament on March 12. The fundraiser will be held at Saint Catharine’s Church Community Hall in Glen Rock and will start at 8 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the foundation’s community outreach programs. The church is located at 905 Maple Avenue, Glen Rock. Tickets are $100 and include a “buy in,” and unlimited food and beverages. Players will compete to win three top prizes, including a flat screen TV and four New York Giants tickets and a parking pass to a game in the upcoming season. The Christopher Barron Live Life Foundation, a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established in February 2009 in honor of Christopher Barron, who died of leukemia in 2007. The foundation’s mission is to instill Barron’s compassion and zest for life by offering children in under-served communities unique opportunities to live life and pursue interests. With Barron’s passion for creating comic books in mind, the foundation has created a comic book writing program and contest that will be lead by professional writers and illustrators. The foundation has launched the comic book writing program with fifth graders at School 21 in Paterson.
